❤️Something about Philosophy - Heidegger
Details
The fourth Thursday of the month is our time to get together for camaraderie, a fun meal, and of course a discussion, regarding something about Philosophy.
From Consciousness to Being: Husserl to Heidegger
At our last gathering, we entered the discipline of phenomenology through the work of Edmund Husserl and his groundbreaking text, Ideas: General Introduction to Pure Phenomenology.
Rather than asking what the world is, Husserl asked how the world appears. We explored:
• The suspension of the “natural attitude”
• The structure of intentionality
• The way objects are given only in profiles (adumbrations)
• The role of consciousness in constituting meaning
But this leaves a provocative question:
If everything appears to consciousness —
what is the status of the world itself?
At our next meeting, we move to Husserl’s most brilliant and radical student, Martin Heidegger, and his monumental work, Being and Time.
Heidegger does not reject phenomenology. He deepens it — and destabilizes it.
Instead of beginning with consciousness, he begins with Being.
Instead of analyzing how objects are constituted in experience, he asks:
• What does it mean to be?
• What does it mean that we are always already “in” a world?
• Is detached observation our primary mode of existence — or is practical involvement more fundamental?
We will explore:
• Being-in-the-world
• The difference between ready-to-hand and present-at-hand
• The shift from subject-object thinking to existential embeddedness
Our focus will not be on mastering terminology.
It will be on experiencing the shift Heidegger makes — from reflective consciousness to lived worldhood.
If Husserl revealed the structure of appearing,
Heidegger asks whether appearing itself rests on something deeper.
Join us as we cross this philosophical threshold — from the analysis of consciousness to the question of Being.
