❤️Philosophers Gather to discuss The Ethics of Language: Is Telling the Truth Enough?
Suppose everything you say is technically true—but you know the other person will probably misunderstand you.
Have you communicated ethically?
We usually think of lying as the central moral problem in language. But deception can also occur through omission, ambiguity, implication, selective disclosure, vagueness, or simply refusing to clarify what we know may be misunderstood.
For this discussion, we’ll begin with Kant’s uncompromising argument about lying and then turn to H. P. Grice’s account of cooperation in conversation.
The larger question is not simply whether we should tell the truth, but:
What do we owe one another when we speak?
Is the speaker responsible only for the literal truth of the words—or also for clarity, relevance, good faith, and the meaning the listener is reasonably likely to take from them?
At what point does unclear communication become an ethical failure?
