What we’re about
Writing can feel like a solitary sport, can't it?
Often it's just you and the voices in your head.
Until now.
Phoenix Oasis Press is here to help you as you walk the brave path of bringing your words and vision to life.
We aim to be an oasis of inspiration and support for Arizona's aspiring, established, and 'I'm-not-really-a-writer' writers.
We create and host low and no-cost resources to help Arizona writers generate work, build skills, share their stories, and connect with the vibrant writing community across the Valley.
Craft, creativity, connection, growth, and support.
We're so glad you've found us.
This in-person book club + writer's craft talk series is ideal for authors of all skill levels who want to read a work of fiction and then discuss it in terms of writing craft elements -- all in a comfortable group setting guided by author Eric Boyd!
*****
September Book: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie.
Synopsis: Roger Ackroyd was a man who knew too much. He knew the woman he loved had poisoned her first husband. He knew someone was blackmailing her – and now he knew she had taken her own life with a drug overdose. However, the evening post brought Roger one last fatal scrap of information, but before he could finish reading the letter, he was stabbed to death. Luckily one of Roger’s friends and the newest resident to retire to this normally quiet village takes over—none other than Monsieur Hercule Poirot . . .
Group Discussion Topic: Key elements of mystery writing in relation to pacing, surprise, and reveals. Click here for an example of the resource sheet Eric created to guide discussion of our last craft book club.
Plan to Bring:
- Your copy of the book (library copy, ebook, paperback, whatever you prefer to read!)
- Something to write with if you like to take notes
- Your enthusiasm to learn new things
**Please also support the coffee shop we'll be meeting at. We're huge fans of local business, and every coffee and cookie purchased helps them thrive.
Capacity: Our venue holds a maximum of 25 people. You must be on the RSVP list to be admitted to this free event.
Host: Eric Boyd
Eric loves to geek out over writing craft, story ideas, and the last book he read. A lawyer and dad to two teenagers, he’s currently querying a middle grade horror piece to agents, and writing an adult horror novel. Eric has led events and workshops for SCBWI, Shut Up & Write, and the Ubergroup, and he brings that same energy and curiosity to POP’s “Writers Read” program.
