AURORA ALERT - March 22-23, 2025

Details

This is a heads-up that we have the potential to see the aurora borealis in Massachusetts.

Aurora is elusive and usually not visible at these latitudes. Our Sun is very active and sometimes throws us a nice CME - Coronal Mass Ejection - that lights up our night with beautiful colors. CMEs are always being generated by the Sun, but Earth has to be in the line of fire for the aurora to generate. The featured image is from the May 10th, 2024 Kp 9 event from my backyard outside of Boston.

Currently, there is potential for Aurora for Saturday-Sunday with a forecast of Kp 7! Find a clear, dark, north-facing location. Keep in mind your camera can see the aurora but not always your eyes, so lean on your camera to determine if the aurora is visible or not.

Maybe we will get lucky. Clear skies!
