We are a the folks from PhotoManhattan School offering free and affordable photography classes in NYC, workshops and photo exhibitions on a monthly basis. All our events are booked with photographers and photo students from our school and remaining spaces are regularly opened for free for the members of this group. Other events and classes may have a nominal fee. You won't be alone. Just walk in head to the front desk, mention that you come from meetup.com, we'll be expecting you. For other photo courses and online webinars please view a wide range of photo classes from street photography, through Studio & Lighting, to TTL flash.
At exhibits, you'll find tons of people, up to 45 at times, music, complementary snacks and beverages, friendly people, and great photographs! You may socialize as much as you like, or simply watch the students' photo series on your own. Exhibitions are open to everyone.
Free classes can be anywhere from 5 to 20 students. They are structured classes, not just talks. We offer remaining spaces for free at meetup.com as often as possible. Some have hands on or outdoor shooting, depending on their description.

This crash course is designed for individuals looking to improve the quality and look of photos for a blog, website or presentation, as well as for any size business looking to quickly and efficiently produce great images of small products such as crafts, apparel and textile, jewelry and flowers, food items, or services and events. It is a hands-on workshop on how to take high-quality photos in a few steps with the equipment that you already have, whether it's an iPhone, point-and-shoot or DSLR. It includes the tools to expand your branding and marketing, expedite productivity, and save time and production costs in the short and long term.The class starts with the basics but moves into the wide range of possibilities you have at hand and most importantly, the practical techniques that you can use to bring out the best in your products without the use of complicated equipment. You'll be provided with an arsenal of expert tricks and tips used for achieving outstanding images for effective e-commerce branding and marketing punch. This course can be taken for any products of small to medium size including hand made crafts, apparel and textile, jewelry and flowers, food or restaurant, and for services and events. Equipment will be made available during class at no extra charge, including backdrops, plexy glass, lights, tripods, umbrellas, tent (light box), and so on. Troubleshooting will be done in class to ensure that you have any questions answered and photos re shoot for success before leaving the workshop.

This course is a perfect complement to your iPhoneography class. Fully outdoors and hands-on. Take a journey into the world of Visuals, Learn the rules, break them and develop your own style. Theres one thing to know how to use your camera, but how do you create a visually appealing photograph? You have the tools, now lets put them to work. Learn all about the rules of composition, when to apply them, when to consider them, and… when to break them!
Made for all camera users alike (DSLRs - Phones), this course focuses on mastering the composition and design of your images and to quickly and efficiently enhance framing, composition and image design, color, pattern, texture, perspective, contrast, balance, lighting and all of the visual aspects of photography that you need to know. Sessions will include plenty of shooting assignments, in-class practice and experimentation, photo critiques of your own work, review of famous photographer's work as well of tons of image reviews that will enrich you and unleash your creative potential. You'll be assigned to photograph a series that you are welcome to showcase at the end of the course. (optional).
Requirements: ANY Camera; point and shoot, DSLR, Mirrorless and Phone cameras. No prior shooting knowledge is required, but we highly recommend knowing the basics of your camera or taking a Beginner's camera course in parallel.

This course is a hybrid of Indoor and Outdoor classes.
Some sessions will be partially indoors and others fully outdoors, in Union Square or Chelsea. Exact location will be determined based on the class size and will be emailed to you prior to the class.
Course information:
Each settings on your camera provides a world of potential for bettering your images, whether you use a DSLR, point and shoot, Mirrorless, or smartphone camera, learn the tons of tricks that you can do with the equipment that you already have, without complexity and staying in Auto mode. You don’t need a high tech camera to make amazing photos. Come grab a seat!
You’ll learn, the main camera settings and options, simple tricks to enhance your sharpness, focus, create motion blur shots, freeze motion, use the on-camera flash, take photos at night, and gain basic control over your exposure. We'll explore settings such as exposure compensation and various presets that can turn a regular image into a special one. Our knowledgeable instructors will guide you through all the main options that your camera has, and how and when to apply each of them based on the effect and scene that you are looking to portray. Additionally, this class will thoroughly introduce to all other digital photography related topics that you will need to know when planning to buy your next camera. These subjects include, megapixels, lenses, noise, white balance, ISO, SD cards and much more. Never miss that shot again!
Class structures are mixed with Photo Critiquing HW, Verbal Instruction and Hands-on Exercises. A mixture to cater to all learning types. Weather permitting, we’ll even go outside and take your newly learned skills to the neighboring streets of NY, including the popular Union Square Park. Additionally, you'll develop your own photo project and will have the option to showcase at the end of the course (optional).
You will also have the option in showing off your photos in one of our monthly photo exhibits! (which you don’t want to miss)!
Want to learn how to use your personal camera, while keeping it simple? Staying on Automatic Modes will be easier than ever after taking this workshop. Come grab a seat with your Mirrorless, Point and Shoot, or DSLR Camera, and even your phone!
Requirements: ANY digital camera, DSLR, Mirrorless, Point and Shoot or Phone cameras. By ANY we mean any kind, type or model.
For the first class, please try to bring your manual for reference. ** Students who completed “Digital Photography I”, don't need to take this course.
Notes on film cameras: Please note that while most content of this course is applicable to digital cameras, you are welcome to attend as long as your film camera has an automatic shooting mode. Should the assigned instructor become suddenly unavailable, we’ll allocate a substitute.
