About us

We are a the folks from PhotoManhattan School offering free and affordable photography classes in NYC, workshops and photo exhibitions on a monthly basis. For a full list of photo classes and events please visit [Photomanhattan.com](https://www.photomanhattan.com).  All our events are booked with photographers and photo students from our school and remaining spaces are regularly opened for free for the members of this group. Other events and classes may have a nominal fee. You won't be alone. Just walk in head to the front desk, mention that you come from meetup.com, we'll be expecting you. For other photo courses and online webinars please view a wide range of photo classes from street photography, through Studio & Lighting, to TTL flash.

At exhibits, you'll find tons of people, up to 45 at times, music, complementary snacks and beverages, friendly people, and great photographs! You may socialize as much as you like, or simply watch the students' photo series on your own. Exhibitions are open to everyone.

Free classes can be anywhere from 5 to 20 students. They are structured classes, not just talks. We offer remaining spaces for free at meetup.com as often as possible. Some have hands on or outdoor shooting, depending on their description.

    # MOBILE FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY: Styling & On-Location Lighting Mastery.

    Food photography is one of a kind! Learn how to make your food photos delicious, fresh, and appetizing. This course is an overall guide for everyone—foodies, chefs, cooks, and restaurant owners—on everything you need to control to achieve the best food imagery using the equipment you already have, including your phone camera.

    ## What You Will Master:

    • Styling & Composition: The do's and don'ts of food styling and staging, focusing on composition, textures, detail, backgrounds, props, and fun visual tricks.
    • Lighting Magic: Master lighting, exposure, and color to ensure food looks perfectly colorful, bright, and sharp. Learn how to manage overhead lights, window light, dark places, and neon light to pop color and brightness.
    • Home-Made Solutions: We'll teach you easy home-made studio setups and simple accessory workarounds for achieving great results in typical indoor spaces, restaurants, and kitchens where lighting options are limited.

    This content is available in two focused formats to suit your learning style:

    • Online Guide/Seminar: An overall guide focusing on camera settings tricks, focus control, and basic composition/styling concepts.
    • Hands-On Photoshoot Workshop (Recommended): A hands-on experiment focusing entirely on the whole set of lighting effects and setups to enhance your photos with texture, contrast, and shine.

    Class information:

    This workshop is a continuation of iPhoneography. It will be a hands on shooting practice of the concepts learned previously: essential camera settings, such as night photography, exposure compensation, portrait mode, shooting tricks, and beyond.

    In addition, workshop will introduce: in-camera edits, filters, color, trending accessories and props, and most popular phone applications, and a brief on framing, lighting and composition.

    ** Please note: this single day workshop focuses specifically on the phone's camera settings. - It will not cover general photography topics - which relate to all cameras- such as Lighting, Portrait, Composition, Street Photo, please refer to the corresponding course such as Digital Camera - A beginner's guide course, or equivalent course.

    Requirements: Smartphone and basic understanding of the Phone's camera menus and settings.

    # HIGH-IMPACT PORTRAITURE: Conceptual Lighting & Editorial Directing.

    This course will guide you through all that there is to see to unleash your imagination and create the most unique, editorial-style portraits. Step into the world of high-end portraiture by learning conceptual lighting techniques, advanced subject direction, and the use of subjective imagery and props.

    ## What You Will Master:

    • Conceptual Lighting: Practice and experimentation with a myriad of advanced lighting effects, including classic light setups, High Key, Low Key, Corrective, and dramatic lighting.
    • DIY Home Studio: Setting up a simple Portrait DIY home studio setup using equipment you already have, maximizing both natural and artificial lighting.
    • Advanced Directing: Directing the subject and utilizing props and background elements to convey a specific narrative or emotion
    • Critique & History: Review, analysis, and practice of all types of portraiture—from documentary to editorial—including the history of portraiture and famous portraitists

    ## Course Structure:

    Classes include in-class photo shooting and experimentation of all techniques, as well as weekly assignments and photo critiques of your own work. This course is a perfect complement to our Studio & Lighting course.

    👁️ VISUAL COMPOSITION & STORYTELLING: The Art of Seeing Light and Design

    This is where your creative photography takes over. Master composition rules (Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines) and learn how to break them to forge your own artistic style. Focus on visual design elements like perspective, color theory, and dynamic framing.

    What You Will Master:

    * Compositional Rules: Master essential composition techniques, including the Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, Symmetry, and Negative Space.

    * Design Elements: Focus on visual design elements such as perspective, color theory, dynamic framing, pattern, and texture to make every image captivating.

    * Creative Vision: Develop your individual style and learn to identify and execute complex concepts that transform a snapshot into a compelling piece of visual storytelling.

    * Hands-On Practice: In-class assignments and critiques focused on developing and refining your unique creative vision.

    This course marks the shift from simply operating a camera to truly creating art. Master the foundational rules of composition and learn when and how to break them to forge your own unique artistic style. Learn to communicate complex ideas and emotions through the frame.

    * Requirements: Any camera (DSLR, Mirrorless, or advanced Point & Shoot).

    * Assumed Knowledge: Basic familiarity with camera operation.
