About us

We are a the folks from PhotoManhattan School offering free and affordable photography classes in NYC, workshops and photo exhibitions on a monthly basis. For a full list of photo classes and events please visit [Photomanhattan.com](https://www.photomanhattan.com).  All our events are booked with photographers and photo students from our school and remaining spaces are regularly opened for free for the members of this group. Other events and classes may have a nominal fee. You won't be alone. Just walk in head to the front desk, mention that you come from meetup.com, we'll be expecting you. For other photo courses and online webinars please view a wide range of photo classes from street photography, through Studio & Lighting, to TTL flash.

At exhibits, you'll find tons of people, up to 45 at times, music, complementary snacks and beverages, friendly people, and great photographs! You may socialize as much as you like, or simply watch the students' photo series on your own. Exhibitions are open to everyone.

Free classes can be anywhere from 5 to 20 students. They are structured classes, not just talks. We offer remaining spaces for free at meetup.com as often as possible. Some have hands on or outdoor shooting, depending on their description.

    Capture your city and make memories that will last a lifetime!

    This street photo session is the more basic version of our Travel Photography course. In this class you will learn the tricks and tips on how to shoot quickly and efficiently so to capture street scenes with the best possible lighting, framing, perspective and exposure. In person sessions include outdoor shooting, in or around Union Square park. Come ready to tour and snap. Whether you shoot with a DSLR, Point and shoot, Mirrorless cameras or a Phone camera, this class is right for you.

    Requirements: Any cameras. Phones, Mirrorless, Point and shoot, or DSLR. No prior knowledge required. And, basic knowledge of how to use your camera.

    Note: class will not be a lesson on camera settings. If you feel you need a reinforcement on it, please take the Digital Camera classes prior to this class.

    Note: if you are taking or plan on taking the Travel Photography course you don't need this class."

    🏙️ STREET, TRAVEL & CITYSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY: Urban workshop is an essential mix of Landscape, Cityscape, and Street Photography, making it ideal for the frequent traveler, the photojournalist, and the photographer who loves shooting anywhere, everywhere.
    This intensive course is mostly conducted outdoors and focuses on honing compositional and technical skills specific to dynamic, real-world environments. You'll be fully prepared for your next outdoor adventure, from capturing expressive street portraits to stunning natural landscapes.

    ## What You Will Master:

    • Location Composition: Learn savvy techniques that will turn your landscape and cityscape images into outstanding ones, focusing on perspective, lighting, and specialized composition rules for outdoor scenes.
    • Street & Candid Techniques: Capture scenes and moments with confidence, including environmental portraiture and the ethics of shooting in public spaces.
    • Real-Time Practice: Experienced instructors guide you through various outdoor shooting scenarios (High Line, Union Square, Central Park, etc.) with immediate review of the work photographed during class.
    • Light Manipulation: The ins and outs of manipulating natural and urban light for impactful location photos.

    This is where your creative photography takes over. Master composition rules (Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines) and learn how to break them to forge your own artistic style. Focus on visual design elements like perspective, color theory, and dynamic framing.

    What You Will Master:

    * Compositional Rules: Master essential composition techniques, including the Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, Symmetry, and Negative Space.

    * Design Elements: Focus on visual design elements such as perspective, color theory, dynamic framing, pattern, and texture to make every image captivating.

    * Creative Vision: Develop your individual style and learn to identify and execute complex concepts that transform a snapshot into a compelling piece of visual storytelling.

    * Hands-On Practice: In-class assignments and critiques focused on developing and refining your unique creative vision.

    This course marks the shift from simply operating a camera to truly creating art. Master the foundational rules of composition and learn when and how to break them to forge your own unique artistic style. Learn to communicate complex ideas and emotions through the frame.

    # ADOBE PHOTOSHOP I: Essential Retouching & Digital Fine-Tuning.

    Learn how to effectively fine-tune your pictures through post-processing using the industry-leading software. This foundational course provides practical instruction to help you gain confidence with core Photoshop tools and techniques for global image adjustments.

    ## What You Will Master:

    • Tonal Control: Mastering key adjustments like brightness and contrast, Levels, and Curves for perfect exposure and tonality.
    • Color Correction: Achieve accurate and vibrant colors using tools like Color Balance and other essential methods.
    • Basic Retouching: Learn to use fundamental tools like the Clone Stamp tool and Filters for cleaning up and enhancing your images.
    • Practical Workflow: Within each class, you will be guided through the software using both in-class images and your own, ensuring immediate application of learned skills.
