
What we’re about
We are a the folks from PhotoManhattan School offering free and affordable photography classes in NYC, workshops and photo exhibitions on a monthly basis. All our events are booked with photographers and photo students from our school and remaining spaces are regularly opened for free for the members of this group. Other events and classes may have a nominal fee. You won't be alone. Just walk in head to the front desk, mention that you come from meetup.com, we'll be expecting you. For other photo courses and online webinars please view a wide range of photo classes from street photography, through Studio & Lighting, to TTL flash.
At exhibits, you'll find tons of people, up to 45 at times, music, complementary snacks and beverages, friendly people, and great photographs! You may socialize as much as you like, or simply watch the students' photo series on your own. Exhibitions are open to everyone.
Free classes can be anywhere from 5 to 20 students. They are structured classes, not just talks. We offer remaining spaces for free at meetup.com as often as possible. Some have hands on or outdoor shooting, depending on their description.

Class information:
Each settings on your camera provides a world of potential for bettering your images. Whether you use a DSLR or a point and shoot, there are tons of tricks that you may be missing out on. We'll explore settings such as exposure compensation and various presets that can turn a regular image into a special one. Our knowledgeable instructors will guide you through all the main options that your camera has, and how and when to apply each of them based on the effect and scene that you are looking to portray.
Topics include, exposure, presets, focus control, motion blur and much more. Never miss that shot again! Join us and learn to maximize your camera's potential to match with your creative skills.
Requirements: Digital camera (DSLR or Point and shoot). No prior knowledge required.

Course information:
Learn how to fine-tune your pictures through post-processing. Topics include adjusting brightness and contrast, color balance, levels, curves, clone stamp, filters and more. Within each class, students receive practical instruction as they are guided through the software and editing process using both in-class images and their own.Requirements: a) Access to Adobe Lightroom – 4 week free trial available at adobe.com. b) Basic knowledge of how to operate your laptop commands.

We have several seminars covering all you need to know about the photo studio, strobes and lighting. This the perfect first step to becoming acquainted with Studio Photography! Workshops are full hands-on photo shooting using professional studio equipment that is provided.
- The basics (separate class): Learn how to use and setup Strobes and accessories and create basic lighting setups. Includes: softboxes, barn doors, snoots, umbrellas, reflectors, flash-meters. For complete beginners. View upcoming dates.
- Lighitng fundamentals (this session): Learn standard lighting techniques, from 3-way lighting to backgrounds, tonality control, and portrait lighting. Prior classes are not required but recommended. View more upcoming dates.
- Special effects (separate class): Bring your product or model and experiment with advanced lighting techniques, such as mixed lighting, product photography and beyond. Prior classes are not required but recommended. View upcoming dates.
The Lighting effects learned in this workshop are top notch and will provide you with solid experience in lighting that is applicable outside of the Photo Studio. Join us for this excellent opportunity to experience Photo Studio shooting without the extra cost of studio rentals and equipment.
Requirements: The basics of your camera's manual mode. Digital SLR or Point & shoot camera with flash mount and manual mode. You are welcome to bring your flash-meter if you own one!

Learn the tricks of Street and Landscape photography. Enhance your Travel Photos with this workshop mix of Landscape, Cityscape and Street Photography, and urban scenery. Capture that scene with confidence and creativity. This course is mostly taken place outdoor and focuses on honing compositional skills specific to landscapes, cityscapes and street photography. Ideal for the frequent traveler, the photojournalist, and the photographer who just likes to take pictures anywhere, everywhere!
Learn savvy techniques that will turn your images into outstanding ones, such as lighting, composition, special effects particular to cityscapes and landscapes. Our experienced instructors will guide you through various sets of exercises and outdoor shooting scenarios that will fully prepare you for your next outdoor adventure. Sessions will consist of real-time shooting and immediate review of the work photographed during class.
In person workshops will mostly outdoors at either the High Line, Union Square, Central Park, or other locations as determined by the instructor. In the winter months, please be prepared for the cold. Some parts of the sessions may take place indoors on very cold days. In case of rain, classes may be rescheduled, as possible.
Requirement:
* Knowing how to operate your camera, in auto or manual mode.
* Any cameras. (Mirroless, Point and shoots, DSLR, or Phone cameras).
Note This course will not review the fundamentals of camera functions and exposure; students are expected to know how to manage their cameras (in automatic or manual mode).
