About us

We are a the folks from PhotoManhattan School offering free and affordable photography classes in NYC, workshops and photo exhibitions on a monthly basis. For a full list of photo classes and events please visit [Photomanhattan.com](https://www.photomanhattan.com).  All our events are booked with photographers and photo students from our school and remaining spaces are regularly opened for free for the members of this group. Other events and classes may have a nominal fee. You won't be alone. Just walk in head to the front desk, mention that you come from meetup.com, we'll be expecting you. For other photo courses and online webinars please view a wide range of photo classes from street photography, through Studio & Lighting, to TTL flash.

At exhibits, you'll find tons of people, up to 45 at times, music, complementary snacks and beverages, friendly people, and great photographs! You may socialize as much as you like, or simply watch the students' photo series on your own. Exhibitions are open to everyone.

Free classes can be anywhere from 5 to 20 students. They are structured classes, not just talks. We offer remaining spaces for free at meetup.com as often as possible. Some have hands on or outdoor shooting, depending on their description.

    🏠 REAL ESTATE PHOTO SECRETS: Capture & Edit for Listing Success

    Boost your listings and capture client attention immediately! This crash course delivers quick, effective tools needed to take stunning, professional real estate photography. Simplify the complex endeavor of interior and property photography. This workshop delivers quick, effective tools needed to take stunning real estate photography. We simplify interior photography: managing tricky lighting, avoiding distortion (wide-angle techniques), and utilizing basic editing tricks (like HDR) for photos that capture clients' attention immediately.

    What You Will Master:

    * Interior Lighting: Managing tricky, uneven lighting in interiors and making even the biggest rooms look spacious. Solutions for complex interior environments where lighting is tricky, furniture is awkward, and rooms must be made to look spacious (not like a closet!).

    * Wide-Angle Mastery: Essential techniques for using wide-angle lenses (or phone modes) effectively while avoiding distortion and an awkward look. Walk-through of effective staging techniques and choosing the correct shooting angles to accurately and attractively represent a property.

    * Post-Processing: Utilizing basic editing tricks (like HDR merging and color correction) for fast turnaround and maximum listing impact.

    * Business Strategy: Pointers on image selection, marketing practices, and how photographs can be effectively shot to increase sales.

    🖼️ LIGHTROOM: The Essential Digital Asset & Workflow. Part 1.

    Adobe Lightroom is the industry-standard application for organizing, optimizing, and sharing photography efficiently. This course introduces the fundamentals of a modern, non-destructive workflow, providing a safe and systematic way to manage your entire photo library and streamline your process.

    What You Will Master:

    * Library Management: Properly importing, cataloging, and organizing photos, and safeguarding your assets from loss due to computer failure.

    * Non-Destructive Editing: Mastering the Develop module for global adjustments, including exposure, tone, and color, for fast, consistent results.

    * Batch Editing: Executing fast, high-volume edits using presets and synchronization for quick turnaround.

    * Output & Sharing: Efficient methods for sharing and exporting for social media, client delivery, and professional printing.

    Part 1 (this course) will cover navigating and understanding the Lightroom menus and settings, filing and the basic edits. Part 2 (a separate course) will focus on more intricate edits - This is recommended if you have already used Lightroom before and are familiar with the basics.

    Requirements & Notes:

    * Requirements: Access to Adobe Lightroom (free 4-week trial available).

    * Assumed Knowledge: Basic digital photography concepts. Efficiency in operating a computer (Mac or Windows) is mandatory.

    # DIY PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY: Mobile Studio & E-Commerce Ready Images.

    This workshop is designed for individuals or small businesses looking to improve the quality and look of their images of small to medium size products, including hand-made crafts, apparel, jewelry, and more. We've merged the technical photography know-how from the pros and adapted the concepts to be used even through thesimplicity of phones and limited lighting access.

    ## What You Will Master:

    • Home-Made Studio: We'll show you how to set up a small, dedicated studio that you can automate for future products, maximizing image quality and shooting efficiency using equipment you already possess.
    • Quality Control: Learn techniques for making your images look great, achieving specific backgrounds, tonalities, and focus in a few quick steps.
    • E-Commerce Workflow: Introduction to shooting techniques that are effective for batch editing and automated post-production, crucial for scaling your online listings.

    ⚙️ MANUAL MODE MASTERY: Unleash Full Creative Control of Your Camera

    This is the essential course for any serious photographer ready to take control of their art. Ditch the fear of the "M" dial! Dive deep into the Exposure Triangle and gain the technical command needed for truly artistic and consistent results.

    What You Will Master:

    * Aperture Control: Master Aperture for professional Depth of Field (DoF), allowing you to create stunning background blur (Bokeh) for portraiture or keep entire scenes perfectly sharp.

    * Shutter Speed: Learn to use Shutter Speed to either freeze action (sports, wildlife) or create intentional motion blur (waterfalls, light trails).

    * ISO Management: Master ISO to capture flawless exposure in any lighting condition, from bright sun to dim interiors, while minimizing digital noise.

    * Metering & Focus: Comprehensive training on camera metering modes and advanced focusing techniques.

    Requirements & Notes:

    * Requirements: Digital Camera (DSLR, Mirrorless, or advanced Point & Shoot) with full Manual (M) Mode capability.

    * Assumed Knowledge: Basic understanding of your camera’s functions or completion of 'Your First Pro Photos'.

    Class structures are mixed with Photo Critiquing HW, Verbal Instruction and Hands-on Exercises. A mixture to cater to all learning types. Additionally, you'll develop your own photo project and will have the option to showcase at the end of the course (optional).

    No need to be afraid of the Manual Mode on your camera anymore! If you have a camera that has the "M" mode you are able to unleash the full potential of your camera's technical ability. No more confusion over what each setting changes in your image! Get a full understanding of Manual Mode settings. Manual Mode unlocked!

    Requirements:
    * Any camera with manual mode (Aperture & Shutter speed control). Digital SLR, Point & shoot, Mirrorless, or film.
    * The Camera's beginners' guide course (which is for Automatic mode cameras) is not required in order to take this course.
    Notes on film cameras: while most content of this course is applicable to digital cameras, you are welcome to attend as long as your film camera has manual shooting mode.
