What we're about

We are a the folks from PhotoManhattan School offering free and affordable photography classes in NYC, workshops and photo exhibitions on a monthly basis. All our events are booked with photographers and photo students from our school and remaining spaces are regularly opened for free for the members of this group. Other events and classes may have a nominal fee. You won't be alone. Just walk in head to the front desk, mention that you come from meetup.com, we'll be expecting you. At exhibits, you'll find tons of people, up to 45 at times, music, complementary snacks and beverages, friendly people, and great photographs! You may socialize as much as you like, or simply watch the students' photo series on your own. Exhibitions are open to everyone.

Free classes can be anywhere from 5 to 20 students. They are structured classes, not just talks. We offer remaining spaces for free at meetup.com as often as possible. Some have hands on or outdoor shooting, depending on their description.

The Camera – A beginners’ guide: May 24-May 25, Friday and Saturday 12:30 PM-5:30 PM. Intensive! Each settings on your camera provides a world of potential for bettering your images, whether you use a DSLR, point and shoot, Mirrorless, or smartphone camera, learn the tons of tricks that you can do with the equipment that you already have, without complexity and staying in Auto mode. You don’t need a high tech camera to make amazing photos. Come grab a seat! You’ll learn, the main camera settings and options, simple tricks to enhance your sharpness, focus, create motion blur shots, freeze motion, use the on-camera flash, take photos at night, and gain basic control over your exposure. We'll explore settings such as exposure compensation and various presets that can turn a regular image into a special one. Our knowledgeable instructors will guide you through all the main options that your camera has, and how and when to apply each of them based on the effect and scene that you are looking to portray. Additionally, this class will thoroughly introduce to all other digital photography related topics that you will need to know when planning to buy your next camera. These subjects include, megapixels, lenses, noise, white balance, ISO, SD cards and much more. Never miss that shot again! Class structures are mixed with Photo Critiquing HW, Verbal Instruction and Hands-on Exercises. A mixture to cater to all learning types. Weather permitting, we’ll even go outside and take your newly learned skills to the neighboring streets of NY, including the popular Union Square Park. Additionally, you'll develop your own photo project and will have the option to showcase at the end of the course (optional). You will also have the option in showing off your photos in one of our monthly photo exhibits! (which you don’t want to miss)! Want to learn how to use your personal camera, while keeping it simple? Staying on Automatic Modes will be easier than ever after taking this workshop. Come grab a seat with your Mirrorless, Point and Shoot, or DSLR Camera, and even your phone! Requirements: ANY digital camera, DSLR, Mirrorless, Point and Shoot or Phone cameras. By ANY we mean any kind, type or model. For the first class, please try to bring your manual for reference. ** Students who completed “Digital Photography I”, don't need to take this course. Course Structure Suggestion: This course covers all of the basics and we therefore highly recommend that it is taken before any other course (except for the Manual Mode course). And pairing it with Creative Photography. This workshop is a full guide to the fundamentals of portraiture. You'll learn: Posing, capturing the moments, Gestures, Body language, backgrounds, shooting angles, and directing and interacting with your subjects. Additionally, you'll learn how to work with simple lighting, including natural light, window light, and simple home made lighting tricks that will efficiently enhance the look of your subjects. You'll also learn environmental portrait and gaining speed in shooting. This course is highly recommended whether you are shooting candids, studio type portraiture, or street and environmental. Requirements: Any digital camera including Phone cameras and mirrorless with Automatic mode. Though not required, we highly recommend knowing the basics of your camera. This course will not cover camera settings and the basics of shooting. Classes will consist of full hands-on shooting using pro photo equipment provided by us, weekly assignments and plenty of experimentation. You don't need to own studio equipment, just have a camera with Manual mode. You'll learn how to use the photo equipment including soft boxes, umbrellas, snoots and flash-meters. You'll do exceptional lighting effects as well as adjust your shoot for exact results. From classic lighting such as key light & fill light, to white on white. Additionally, you'll learn how to work with mixed lighting (Ambient and flash), motion blur with flash. The Lighting effects learned in this workshop are top notch and will provide you with solid experience in lighting that is applicable outside of the Photo Studio. This course is an excellent opportunity to experience Photo Studio shooting without the extra cost of Photo studio rentals and equipment. We highly recommend taking this course to fully understand lighting in and outside of the Studio. Requirements: Any camera with Manual mode and to know the basics of exposure in Manual mode.
