About us

Iโ€™m a ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐ง๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐š๐ซ๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ญ๐ž๐œ๐ญ, ๐š๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ซ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ ๐ก๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ž๐ซ who has spent years thinking about how people experience stories together.

Iโ€™ve also spent years ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐›๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐›๐จ๐จ๐ค ๐œ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐›๐ฌ.

People fall behind. People feel guilty. People get trapped in books theyโ€™re no longer enjoying. Sometimes the conversation becomes more about sounding smart than actually experiencing the story. And some of my favorite forms of storytelling โ€” audiobooks, stage plays, performed literature, audio drama, even musicals โ€” rarely seem to fit comfortably into traditional reading spaces.

So I wanted to try something different:

The Phoenix Live Listening Club started as a one-off experiment
for curious people who love stories but donโ€™t necessarily have the time (or desire) to sit down and read traditional books, attend plays, see musicals, etc. The experiment was a success, so I'm doing it again very soon end of early July. Aiming for Sunday, July 5, but will have official event posted soon.

Instead of reading beforehand, we experience the story together in real time.

The club is built around audiobooks, stage plays, performed literature, audio drama, musicals, short stories, and other forms of narrative listening.

During each two-hour session, weโ€™ll listen together as a group. At any point, anyone in the room can pause the audio to share a thought, ask a question, point out a line they loved, or explore something the story stirred up in them. Sometimes those conversations may last thirty seconds. Sometimes they may grow into something much larger before we return to the story.

The goal isnโ€™t to โ€œget throughโ€ a certain amount of material.

The goal is shared listening, curiosity, conversation, and attention.

Asthe experiment proved meaningful, the group will continue meeting roughly every two weeks to continue the same audio work โ€” or begin a new one together. We take a vote at the end of the club. Majority wins. Flip a coin for a tie.

Just listening, curiosity, conversation, and shared attention.

We meet at the Tempe Public Library.

Iโ€™ll post the exact library study room and selected audio on the event page.

Feel free to arrive early. I'll be in the library cafรฉ area 30 minutes before we start. A few minutes before club, I'll head over to get setup. If youโ€™d like to grab a drink or snack beforehand you may bring it into the club. We'll start promptly at 2pm and end on the nose at 4pm.

Seating is limited to seven total, myself included. Because seating is intentionally limited, please only RSVP if you genuinely plan to attend. If your plans change, simply update your RSVP as early as possible so another listener can take your place.

I'm excited to discover what kind of experience we create next time!
