One possible career path for engineers is leadership: technical leadership, people management, or both. Typically you’d start by mentoring other engineers, facilitating meetings and leading projects. Before you know it, you’ll be responsible for a team, managing people’s growth and determining team priorities rather than writing code.

For many software engineers, growing as an individual contributor (IC) could be a more appropriate path.
