Details
Join us for the first seminar in the Robert M. Rodrigues History Series:
Pittsburgh's Connection to the USS Juneau and the Five Sullivan Brothers
For over 40 years, Robert M. Rodrigues inspired students at Chartiers Valley High School to further their knowledge of the past and better their communities for the future. This year, following Mr. Rod's retirement, we introduce The Robert M. Rodrigues History Series, open to Mr. Rod's former students and colleagues as well as history lovers from around the region. The inaugural "seminar" of the RMR History Series will focus on the pivotal role that the USS Juneau, a light cruiser in the United States Navy, and the five Sullivan brothers, played in World War II as well as their connection to our region. Mr. Rod and Fund board member Vincent Kolo will take us back to the early days of the US's involvement in the war. Guest speaker Kelly Ann Sullivan, granddaughter of Albert Leo Sullivan, the youngest Sullivan brother, will share her family's journey from sending five sons to the Pacific to rallying the nation in support of the war effort. Lastly, Mr. Rodrigues will help us to think about these events in the context of American history and society today. As part of the evening's program, we will honor the many young men from Southwestern Pennsylvania who served and lost their lives on the USS Juneau. Event Details:
12:00pm: Doors open
12:30pm: Program start
