Map and Compass Orienteering at Northmoreland Park

Details

The Western Pennsylvania Orienteering Club will have a meet at Northmoreland Park, near Apollo, PA, on Saturday April 13.

Orienteering is a form of off-trail cross-country running/walking where participants find flags in the woods and outdoors using a special topographic map.

It can be done leisurely or competitively. Families with children or athletes both enjoy it. It has a bit of a "scavenger hunt" quality in it, and for the off-trail bushwacking runner, it is more than just a trail run in the woods, it is a "thinking sport", where one must occasionally stop and consult the map to find the right direction to the orienteering flag ("checkpoint" or "control").

Not a mass start, but staggered starts. Anyone can start anytime between 11 AM and 2 PM. Event closes at 3:30 PM.

There will be five courses available:
Beginner (2.2 km)
Novice (3.3 km)
Intermediate (4.6 km)
Advanced short (3.5 km)
Advanced Long (6.7 km)

Cost is $6 per map. Family or group doing event together with just one purchased map, the cost for the entire group is still just $6.

Please preregister so we make enough maps for everyone; go to http://www.wpoc.org/preregistration.htm Notes: Preregistration does not involve paying any money. You can use this same link to cancel your preregistration if you need to. The deadline for preregistering is Apr 9.

For driving directions, go to http://www.wpoc.org/northmorelandflyer.htm

Don't forget, if you are bringing a minor who is not your son or daughter, you need to bring a waiver signed by the minor's parent (obtainable under Orienteering Events at www.wpoc.org ).
