Mindfulness practice is an awareness exercise that involves attending to sensation with an attitude of calm, non-judgemental acceptance from moment to moment. Because the mind naturally wanders, a lot of mindfulness exercise is about gently playing catch with one's attention. Each gentle return of one's attention to present moment sensations is like doing a "mental push-up," that strengthens skills for self-awareness and the stability of attention. To be clear, mindfulness is an awareness exercise with a side effect of activating "The Relaxation Response." Mindfulness is known for cultivating stress management skills that can last a lifetime.
Cultivating a personal routine mindfulness practice can promote health, wellness, and resilience. Weekly sessions are offered Tuesdays from noon to 1 PM as a public service by Mindful Pittsburgh. (No fee.)
The weekly meetings have a format of:
- Introductions & Gratitude Practice
- Weather Report & Noting ( Body, Emotions, Thoughts, & Mindsets)
- Discussion of mindfulness exercises, and
- Farewell Blessings ("May we be well," etc.)
Beginner's welcome!
Dr. Richard King facilitates mindfulness exercise groups to build community, stress reduction skills, and to cultivate intentional habit change. We practice a variety of exercises including belly breathing, focused attention mindful breathing, body scan, mindful walking, mindful eating, and thought watching.
Typical goals for mindfulness practice, which is sometimes referred to as "Heartfulness," include building skills for emotional resilience, the stability of attention, and peak performance. Mindfulness exercise, if practiced daily, builds life skills for balance, resilience, self-regulation, and focused attention.

Here is a link to a workbook journal that is very much a work in progress... I'll need to add references and such. Comments welcome. Would like to see if there is interest for a free on-line workshop as well.
