Saddle Mountain Hike (Oregon Coastal Range)

Details

Distance: 5 miles
Elevation Gain: 1,800 feet
Difficulty: 6/10

Join me for a hike up Saddle Mountain, my favorite trail in the Northern Oregon Coastal Range. The highest point in Clatsop County, the summit offers sweeping views of the Pacific coast, the mouth of the Columbia River, and many surrounding Cascade volcanoes. Several species of wildflowers should still be in bloom, adding a splash of color along the way.

We'll be getting an early start, as this is a popular trail and parking fills up quickly on weekends. Plan to arrive early for a prompt 8:30 AM departure from the trailhead. The hike should take us roughly 3 to 4 hours, including some time at the summit to relax and enjoy the views.

The trail is of moderate difficulty - please know your own limits. Expect a long, constant climb with steep, rocky sections. Be sure to bring sturdy hiking shoes or boots and plenty of water.

Dogs are allowed on the trail, and leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome on the hike. However, be aware that much of the upper trail is covered with wire mesh for traction, with sharp edges that might injure paws. Be prepared to use extra caution if you decide to bring your pup along.

There will likely be an optional post-hike lunch stop on the way back to Portland. Carpooling is encouraged, please leave a comment if you'd like a ride, or you have space for extra passengers.
