McNeil Point Trail - Alpine Meadows & Glacial Views

Details

Distance: ~9.5-11 miles
Elevation Gain: ~2,500-3,400 feet
Difficulty: 7.5/10

Looking for a quintessential Mt. Hood experience? Join me for a summer hike to McNeil Point, one of the most scenic destinations on the mountain’s northwest flank. We'll wind through old-growth forest, climb through wildflower-filled alpine meadows, and be rewarded with jaw-dropping views of glaciers, ridgelines, and the towering summit of Hood itself.

This is a fairly strenuous hike, so please come prepared. We'll keep to a moderate pace, but be aware of the significant distance and elevation. Please know your own limits. We'll aim to summit mid day and enjoy an extended lunch break at McNeil Point before heading back to the trailhead. Depending on the group's pace and desires, we may elect to add on the short but steep spur trail above McNeil to Ho Rock (an additional 1.5 miles and ~900' climb).

Plan to meet at the Gateway transit center by 7:30am for carpooling, or directly at the Top Spur trailhead at approximately 9:00am.

Bring: plenty of water, snacks, lunch, sun protection, an extra layer, sturdy hiking shoes or boots. Trekking poles are a good idea if you have them.

This is a dog friendly trail, and well-behaved dogs are definitely welcome! Just be aware that it's a long hike with sun exposed sections. Make sure your pup is capable, and has plenty of water.

Carpooling is strongly encouraged, as trailhead parking is limited. The road is a bit rough - most cars should be okay with careful driving, but very low clearance vehicles are not recommended. According to the Forest Service website, a parking pass is not currently required at the trailhead.

As a volunteer host, it's my goal that everyone who attends has a safe and enjoyable experience. But by attending this hike, you acknowledge that you are solely responsible for your own safety and well-being. This is a casual outing and not a guided tour, please come prepared, know your own limits, and hike at your own risk.
