Herman Creek to Dry Creek Falls via Pacific Crest Trail
Details
Distance: ~8.6–9 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: ~1,000 feet
Difficulty: Moderate
Description:
Starting from the Bridge of the Gods Trailhead in Cascade Locks, this hike follows the Pacific Crest Trail south through lush Gorge forest. The path is gentle, winding through Douglas firs, bigleaf maples, and carpets of moss and ferns. You’ll hear Dry Creek as you approach the turnaround point, where the forest suddenly opens to reveal Dry Creek Falls — a 74-foot waterfall tucked into a dramatic basalt amphitheater.
Because this hike is mostly forested and at lower elevation, it’s a great year-round or shoulder-season option when higher trails are still snowed in. In early spring, the forest floor is full of fresh greenery and wildflowers. It’s quieter than the more famous Gorge waterfalls but offers that same magical mossy vibe.
What to Bring:
- Sturdy hiking shoes (trail is well-maintained but can be muddy in spring)
- Layers for changing Gorge weather
- Water and snacks for the turnaround at the falls
- Sun/rain protection depending on forecast
- Camera or phone — the basalt amphitheater is photogenic!
- Optional: poles if you like a bit more stability on forest trails
