Dog Mountain is one of my favorite trails in the gorge, and the views are even more spectacular right at the start of peak wildflower season. It's a busy trail this time of year, so let's sidestep the weekend permit requirements and head up for a Friday evening sunset hike.

Plan to arrive at the trailhead early - we will be departing promptly at 5:45 pm. Expect a steady pace with minimal breaks to reach the summit in time for sunset. This is a challenging hike. If you haven’t completed hikes with similar elevation gain, this event will not be the best introduction as we may not be able to wait for slower hikers due to limited daylight. The descent will be in the dark so be sure to bring a headlamp.

Bring: sturdy hiking shoes or boots, plenty of water, snacks, a working headlamp, and a warm extra layer (it's often chilly and windy at the top).

Well-behaved, capable dogs are welcome. If your pup comes along, make sure to bring enough water for both of you, as there are no creeks or water sources on the trail. Please don't bring any dogs that are aggressive towards people or other dogs.

Carpooling is encouraged and can be coordinated in the comments. Each vehicle at the trailhead will need either to display a valid NW Forest Pass or pay the $5 day-use fee.

My goal is to ensure that all attendees have a safe and enjoyable experience, but please be aware that I am a volunteer host and not a professional guide. By attending this hike, you acknowledge that you are accepting sole responsibility for your own safety and well-being. Please come prepared, know your own limits, and hike at your own risk.
