The Portland Film Festival’s Indie Film Series is proud to present two films featuring Indigenous directors: a feature: For Walter and Josiah and a short: ByKids: Against the Current.
For Walter and Josiah by Director Jamie Elias 2020 Rated R. The Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana is shaken to its core by a teen suicide epidemic that claims 22 Native lives in a single year – including two high school basketball team members. ‘For Walter And Josiah’ follows the team during their season as the surviving members play to honor their fallen brothers and uplift their community.
ByKids: Against the Current by Director Daunnette Moniz-Reyome 2020 Rated G. Native American teen activist Daunnette Moniz-Reyome (age 17) shares her family’s journey to retain the sacred rituals and values of their culture in the wake of centuries of loss from disease, war and government policies.
Advocates of diverse stories, we invite you to join us in this journey of discovery and dialogue. Support independent voices and become part of a community that values storytelling.
Food and drink are available for purchase starting a 6 pm in the Kennedy School Theater lounge with tabled seating in the theater. The screening starts at 7 pm and you can ask questions and discuss during the film’s Q&A period afterward. Plenty of available free parking.
