Kayak Camping at Hope Island
Details
Come join us at the south end of Puget Sound, only 2.5 hours from Portland. (There is another Hope Island up near Deception Pass, but we will be camping on the Hope Island near Olympia, in Mason County, WA)
This is a really beautiful spot, and the best part is that it's close to shore and suitable for beginners. You do not need all the proper gear, skills & experience required for trips in the San Juans & elsewhere in Puget Sound, and it's an excellent opportunity to gain experience & skills for such trips if you are interested. Paddle boards, canoes, etc. are welcome,
Everyone will initially be put on the waitlist. Priority goes to people we have previously paddled and/or camped with.
Please only sign up if you are serious about going, & keep your RSVP updated if something changes.
We are asking for a $10 fee to cover a group meal on Saturday night. Not refundable after 6/20 when we start grocery shopping.
Please post here & contact us if you would like to camp out for an additional night on Friday or Sunday.
We have extra kayaks we can bring for people who don't have their own, or would prefer to use a sea kayak which is faster & safer than most recreational kayaks, with more room for storage. Suggested kayak donation is $25-50 for this trip.
We will be loading all of our gear into our kayaks, paddling out to Hope Island and spending the night there. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag, tent (or hammock) food, water, and if possible, immersion gear (dry suit or wetsuit). No potable water is available on the island, and unfortunately fires & dogs are not allowed.
Overnight parking is free and seems to be fairly safe. Most of the people who park there are other paddlers, fishermen & professional shellfish harvesters. No passes are required.
