(Some paddles are appropriate for any boat, others are can be more technical and for safety will need double hull or other floatation as a minimum.)
Somewhat faster kayaks, and/or a bit of paddling strength & stamina are recommended for most paddles. Most are not difficult, but time constraints require we will need to at least keep a moderate pace. Feel free to post any questions you may have about this, or message the host directly.
What to bring:
- A kayak
- Personal Flotation Device (PFD) and whatever else you need to keep safe
- Something to keep your essentials dry. (key fobs and phones don’t work well when wet)
- whistle -
- Sun protection
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Water and snacks
We love when you bring friends but they do need to sign up individually so they agree to the terms and conditions as this is an active event that has risks. Hosts / organizers on Meetup are unpaid volunteers and claim no special expertise or knowledge. We will paddle as a group but ultimately you are responsible for your own experience, safety and decision-making.
You are responsible for your gear, for safety PFD’s are required to be worn while on the water at all events.
Our paddles have grown in popularity. Everyone will go on a waitlist and priority will be given to people who have done the following:
- Donated to support the Portland Kayaking Meetup group expenses, if you would like to do this details are below.
- People who have attended in town paddles with us previously, people that we know, are active on our facebook page, and are generally supportive of the group.
- Have a good attendance record. We hate to tell people a paddle is full, but it’s even worse when someone doesn’t show up and we have turned others away.
Please support our group and consider making a small $10 donation once per season. To support the annual meetup expenses and other costs.
Members who have paid dues will be given preference for available spots on paddles.
Don’t forget oregon requires an Oregon water ways permit: they can be purchased digitally here: https://www.oregon.gov/osmb/boater-info/pages/ais-faqs.aspx
