What we’re about
Portland Young Meditators is a meditation, mindfulness and social group for those who identify in some way as "young" - most of our members are in their 20s and 30s, but all are welcome. The idea of focusing on age is not meant to be exclusionary, but rather to promote community, connection and inspiration among an age group that is often in the minority at many meditation centers. \
The group is a way to connect, share space, presence, ideas and practice with others who are interested in meditation and mindfulness, community and social engagement, regardless of what tradition you may practice in.
Our practice centers on a weekly "social meditation" where we explore relating with each other in a way that is more mindful and more vulnerable. This practice starts with a silent seated meditation, followed by a group discussion. Instruction and guidance is available during the silent portion for any who are new to meditation or would like a refresher (please arrive a little early so we can point you in the right direction).
Our weekly practice is often followed by continued socializing over drinks and food at a nearby pub. We also hold potlucks, campouts, and other group activities outside the weekly schedule to satisfy our collective desire for mindful relaxation and adventure. New members are welcome to join us at any of these events!
All formal meditations and other events are held at the Breathe Building in SE Portland, unless otherwise noted.
Community Ground Rules
- Always treat one another with respect for personal space, dignity, stated boundaries, and privacy.
- Do not insult, judge, diminish, threaten, or be dismissive towards others.
- Respect others’ confidentiality. What is said in group stays in group. This means refraining from gossip and discussions of material from within the group and also respecting others' wishes to stop conversations or discontinue a discussion topic.
- Although we do our best to facilitate and intervene during a group event, the organizers are ultimately not responsible for anyone else's behavior.
- Group facilitators will do their best to maintain a welcoming and safe community but are not responsible for anything that happens outside of our group events.
- If you feel that someone has broken any of these agreements, please let one of the organizers know.
- If you fail to adhere to any of these agreements you may be removed from the group and prohibited from attending our events at the discretion of the organizers.

This group is open to practitioners of all ages and experience (including those new to meditation) interested in exploring meditation practice in a secular, non-dogmatic environment.
Practice begins with half an hour of silent meditation (instruction available), followed by social meditation. Social meditation is a practice of mindful communication (think meditative talking circle) in which body, speech and mind come together to help us bring congruency to our experience and communication in the present moment. The practice fosters a sense of both confidence and community.
While engaging vulnerably with your own experience is encouraged during this practice, this is not meant to be a therapy group and is not a replacement for therapy. The facilitators are not trained mental health professionals. In order to keep this practice safe, anything shared during this practice should be considered confidential. You are welcome to discuss your own experience outside of practice, but please do not discuss others' experiences or refer to anything shared during group unless the person who shared brings it up first.
This event is held at the Breathe Building. If you would like to attend this event, we ask that you please create an account and register for the event on the Breathe Building site hosted by Momence.
