About us
This group is for people who want to learn Portuguese in an unconventional way.
We gather about once a week to immerse ourselves in the Portuguese language and contemporary culture.
We don't:
- Use textbooks.
- Do any hardcore grammar study.
- Force you to speak before you feel ready.
We do:
- Learn through play (yes, play! For grown-ups!)
- Chase the flow state
- Gather in person with other humans who are on the struggle bus of learning Portuguese
We organise different types of events, all targeting different language learning techniques:
- Flow State Portuguese: an event where you are invited to craft, draw, build puzzles, play with clay, or whatever else gets you into a flow state while a Portuguese native speaker reads a story to you in both English and Portuguese, repeating each sentence line-by-line in both languages. This allows your brain to encode from one language into the other while you are relaxed. It isn't even conscious. You just get to chill while absorbing Portuguese. No speaking or activities. Introvert approved.
- Sip and Speak: our event for those who wish to start speaking Portuguese. It isn't a regular language exchange session, however. We provide you with interesting conversation prompts, get you to write down your thoughts before speaking, and also make space for silly things, like puppetry, to get you speaking unselfconsciously.
- Games Nights: Sometimes we play Sueca, the iconic Portuguese card game beloved by uncles all over the country, and sometimes we play Risca e Petisca (it is like pictionary but for Portuguese proverbs). Always a laugh. Donation-based event, so you can come for free!

COMPLAIN IN PORTUGUESE | Portuguese and Play
Prisma Estudio, R. da Palma 268, 1100-089 ,, Lisbon, PTTHE DOLLS ARE TAKING OVER @prisma.lx to help us learn Portuguese! Why the hell did any of us stop playing with dolls anyway? They help unlock our imaginations and playful nature, which is excellent when you are trying to learn Portuguese. You can be anywhere on your Portuguese journey to join this event (half of the fun is figuring out what the hell someone else is trying to say!) Portuguese and Play is all about making it fun to learn, forget you are trying, and hack your brain to create a virtuous cycle of language learning.
Welcome to SIP AND SPEAK. We point you to the bar, where you can grab a drink to loosen up the nerves, and allow the Portuguese to flow more naturally. Non-alcoholic options are also available.
## What to expect
To make things easier, we structure the event around scenarios to role play. We give you a prompt (e.g. you need to complain to your boss about your coworker's terrible body odour) and you collaborate with another attendee to write a dialogue. You then have the opportunity to present your dialogue to the group, simply reading it or acting it out for dramatic effect! You are welcome to use whatever tools you need to get your dialogue written.
Shy folks, despair not, if you don’t feel comfortable reading your dialogue out loud, our facilitators are at the ready to assist!
We are teaming up with Moma (@momaliciousss) for Sip and Speak to do the roleplay using her epic dolls as conduits for our expression. Moma can also assist with Brazilian pronunciation and grammar. Jo (@frctrx) will also be there to help facilitate the session, focussing on Portuguese pronunciation and grammar.## About Portuguese and Play
Portuguese and Play is the brain and love child of Astrid Lillie, a Portuguese language learner herself. Our goal is to make learning Portuguese more playful and fun, as we believe that this is a way to unlock the virtuous cycle with respect to language learning. We believe in mixed level group classes, acquisition through exposure, diversity and inclusion.
