Topic: Beyond Power BI Desktop: A Beginner's Guide to Power BI Service
Abstract:
Power BI Desktop is where reports are built, but Power BI Service is where analytics are delivered, governed, and consumed at scale. Many beginners stop at the desktop layer, missing the capabilities that turn reports into shared, secure, and continuously refreshed business assets.
This session explores how Power BI Desktop fits into the broader Power BI architecture and how the Service extends report development into real-world deployment. We will look at the key Service concepts, workspaces, semantic models, dashboards, data refresh, gateways, and security, and how they work together to support collaboration and controlled access to insights.
In this session, we will:
- Explain the Power BI architecture and the roles of Desktop and Service
- Walk through publishing a report to a workspace and understanding semantic models
- Demonstrate dashboards, refresh, and on-premises data gateways
- Show how sharing, workspace roles, and Row-Level Security (static and dynamic) protect data
This session is intended for beginner to early-career Power BI users who want to move beyond building reports and start deploying Power BI solutions the way they are used in real organizations. Attendees will leave with a clear mental model of Power BI Service and practical guidance for transitioning from Desktop to enterprise-ready analytics.
