Zebracorn Pegasus - Myth or Legend? - Grady Kelly

Some say they don't exist. Others say if they did, they would be unnatural. Like the Chimera, the Zebracorn Pegasus has the head of a UX Designer, the body of a Visual Designer and the tail of a Front end Developer. In some organizations they may not be needed at all. But when you are a UX Team of One, it is a mutation that is all to essential. In this talk, we will discuss this multifaceted UX Designer and how these skills can be an asset to any designer in any organization.

About Grady

Grady has worked as a Designer for over 14 years. The better part of that time spent working on enterprise web apps. Designing solutions for these applications, where people live in them every day, is what he loves most about his job. Innovating them follows a close second.  You could say he is on a crusade to fix the bad reputation that some have about apps in the enterprise. When he is not designing, he's either playing the guitar or working on designing a few personal projects.

    I found the same problem in my process just a few months ago.

    For the first time in a while, I was on a project where I wasn't responsible for the front-end code, and there were details everywhere that were pointed out as missing, and my response was, "Oh, yeah. I was just planning on nailing that down when I code it up, but I'm not doing that in this project ..."

    Grady, I really enjoyed your presentation and the discussion that followed. On the way back to the office, an unasked question came to me. Using your abilities to code, do you have to maintain more discipline in your design process so that you don't skip some essential step and jump right into coding?

    As an example, I hate sketching with paper and pencil. A big part of me prefers to jump into Axure or Illustrator or similar skipping the sketching step. I have found, though that if I don't have the concept straight on paper, I spend more time in the SW tool than I do if I just draw a sketch. So I have found a need to maintain discipline and sketch things out first.

    Have you found a similar phenomenon in your process?
