Title: Exposure to other designer’s work online makes us stronger as designers

Description:
Today’s designers have a world of interaction design at their fingertips. The apps they use, the web they browse, and the portfolios that are shared online provide an abundance of resources for references and inspiration. 15 years ago designers were in the opposite situation. In a pre smartphone world where web was in it’s mainstream infancy, designers had limited access to pursue other’s work. The question this panel will debate is this: does the designer of today push the creative boundaries of interaction design because they have more inspiration to pull from, or does this lead to lazy designers who simply re-appropriate the current design status quo?

Our Debaters:

Sloan Ellis, is currently a Creative Director at IBM for the Digital Business Group. She has 20 years of experience in UX design, 13 of those years at IBM. She is responsible for leading the design of ibm.com’s innovative user experience design system. As a design thought leader she is keenly focused on simplifying complexities and creating delightful user experiences. She is dedicated to sharing knowledge as a mentor and community member within IBM and her local design community.

Krissie Shelley has been creating online user experiences for over 15 years. Her background in programming and UI design help her navigate technical limitations while still focusing on great user experience. She is a senior user experience designer at Nav.

As the founder of Stotion, Seth Taylor has championed a powerful approach to design thinking and strategy. He demonstrates expertise in all things design, and a robust comprehension of business strategy, technology, web development, and behavioral psychology.

His personal philosophy is that any project, big or small, can be made great. His unique approach has proven valuable to billion dollar companies such as Google, Samsung and AmericanExpress. Seth’s work has garnered awards from AIGA and his custom fonts and imagery have been licensed by A&E Television Networks, Major League Baseball, MSP-C, and others. Seth is the creator of fontlines.com. For fun, he likes to collect entomological treasures, sleep outdoors, play and mentor his kids, learn about biomimicry, and mountain bike.

Joe Faux has been doing awesome things since he was 3. Before that Joe was kind of a baby. 20 years ago, he started making web stuff and working on his computer hacking skills and has never looked back. Now he owns all of UX at Vivint Solar. Joe is also a master ice cream maker and has invented like 40 flavors this year.

Title: It’s time we start telling our process, “Its not you! It's me!”

Description: Have you ever felt like your product design or development process was failing you? We talk a lot about process, but we seem to forget that a lot of times the process isn’t broken—we are!

Process doesn’t live in a vacuum, so let’s get personal and talk about how self-awareness and situational awareness are the keys to understanding how our inter and intra-personal struggles prevent our processes from being successful.
