Join us for a delicious beer and a remix of last week's discussion on Ethics & Metaphysics! Don't worry if you couldn't join us last week, we have a notes sheet to catch you up...hope to see you there!
Ethics and metaphysics are deeply intertwined: our understanding of reality shapes how we define good and bad. A theist may see morality as universal and divinely revealed, while a humanist might point to our evolutionary drive for cooperation as the true root of ethics. Still others argue that morality is entirely relative, shifting across cultures and eras. Each of these views makes strong claims—and raises challenging questions. If morality is universal, how do we explain its many variations? If morality is relative, how do we agree on boundaries that protect human dignity?
Our ideas of right and wrong get instilled over time, but they come from somewhere. Are they grounded in something beyond us—whether divine, natural, or universal—or are they simply the product of culture, circumstance, and personal experience? Albert Einstein once suggested that ethics should grow from sympathy, education, and social ties, rather than from fear of punishment or hope of reward. Others, like theologian Francis Schaeffer, argued that morality must be rooted in something higher than human opinion: the very character of God. Between those poles lies a fascinating landscape of belief, doubt, and debate.
This conversation invites us to wrestle with some of the oldest and most important questions humans have asked: Is there such a thing as a moral truth that transcends culture and time? How does our personal worldview shape our ethical framework? And what happens when those frameworks collide in a diverse, pluralistic society? Come ready to share your perspective, hear others’, and explore together where our sense of morality really comes from.
We hope to see you there - Prost!
