July Meetup: SciPy 2014 and various other lightning talks

Details

The only topics I can speak about at this time are the dill serialisation module (a better pickle) and SciPy 2014. Unfortunately I am not as well prepared as I should be but I don't want to cancel.

I do have a high quality talk on time management prepared for a Toastmasters presentation which unfortunately has little to do with Python. It's only about 6 minutes though.

Perhaps we should treat this Friday as a working session. I want to spend some time investigating Jedi integration for Emacs https://pypi.python.org/pypi/jedi/

One thing we could discuss as a group is a project-based intermediate Python workshop.
https://openhatch.org/blog/2012/intermediate-python-workshop-wrap-up/

"The goals are two-fold:

  1. Develop and playtest a bunch of novel projects with which intermediate Python programmers can practice their skills. This material would be available online under a permissive license for the whole Python community to reuse and remix.
  2. Provide an opportunity for Boston Python Workshop alums and other beginner-to-intermediate programmers to practice together at their own pace with the support of experienced mentors."

Jessica Mckellar runs the very successful Boston Python User Group and has organized some curricula so we could adapt some of her material. http://pyfound.blogspot.ca/2013/08/congratulations-to-jessica-mckellar.html

====================

A recap of some highlights of SciPy 2014 as well as various other talks. Perhaps Kris Read can talk about Flask or other people have topics they would like to present. The trello board URL is https://trello.com/board/pyyyc-talks/51d36f98557c7df774001e02. Please add ideas about talks you would like to hear or present to the group.

"We are migrating a big Django app to micro services with Flask and lighter weight tools. Would do a meetup talk. KR"

Date and venue are tentative but it will be after July 12th. I think a week will be enough time for me to deliver a high quality 10-20 minute talk.

Giving a good high quality talk takes a lot of work. Fortunately there are resources available that can help you in this endeavour.

Any lecture by David Malan is generally very very good.
