PyData Leeds brings together people who are passionate about Python, Data & Engineering for evenings focussed around learning and networking.
Schedule:
Date: Tuesday 16th June 2026
Time: 17:30
Location: Hippo Event Space (Behind Brew Society), Aire Street, Leeds, LS1 4HT
Agenda:
17:30: Networking and Refreshments
18:00: Welcome & Icebreaker
18:15: Obinna Iheanachor - Senior AI/Data Engineer at Rotork and Founder of Wisabi Analytics - 'Local-First AI: Reducing Cloud Cost and Latency in Document Pipelines'
Most document AI systems send every file directly to cloud APIs for processing. That approach is simple, but it increases cost, latency, and data exposure. This talk presents a local-first architecture pattern for document processing pipelines: handle predictable documents locally using Python tools like PyMuPDF and traditional extraction methods, then route only uncertain cases to cloud LLMs. Using a real production case study processing 4,700 engineering PDFs, I'll show how this hybrid approach reduced runtime, lowered API usage, and improved operational reliability without sacrificing accuracy.19:00: Fay Churchill - Head of Data Science at ITV - Data Science Leadership in the GenAI Gold Rush'
The mandate for data science leadership has undergone a seismic shift. We have moved rapidly from an era where AI was a niche curiosity to one where it sits at the centre of every strategic discussion. While this visibility offers unprecedented opportunity, it introduces a collection of new challenges. Suddenly everyone is talking our language, but are they saying the same thing? The conflation of AI, ML, GenAI and Agentic workflows reinforces the need for us to cut through hype and remain laser focused on business problems and driving value. Part strategic deep-dive and part group therapy, this session explores how to maintain technical integrity while satisfying the thirst for innovation.
19:45: Wrap-up & DrinksIf you have been before, we look forward to seeing you again and if you're coming along for the first time, we're excited to meet you and for you to join the Leeds PyData Community.
