THE TALKS
Tall Tales of Tabulation - Ruth Whelan-Jeans (She/Her)
In today's data-driven world, the simple acts of reading, writing and querying a table have gained unprecedented levels of attention. Academic and industrial communities alike have sought to deliver each operation at blazingly fast rates and break all land speed table based records. This talk will dive into the history of data types, from primordial txts to state of the art delta tables, and aim to explain how the technologies underpinning each type are precisely optimised for different data operations.
Ruth is a Senior Data Engineer at Netacea. Having experience across the data space, from Data Science to Data Engineering Ruth is a jack of all trades. With a background in astrophysics Ruth started in data working on developing new ML models in cyber security, spent time working on productionising models and improving MLOps skills, and now she works on high throughput data systems, that handle 5 billion events per day!
The importance of open data and methods in Climate Value Analytics - Rory Fitzpatrick (He/Him)
Climate Change, induced by Global Warming, affects everyone and everything on the planet. In order to drive resilient change through mitigation and adaptation, clear data and strategies are required. For businesses, adapting to a changing climate can seem overtly complex, due to the difficulty of building a holistic picture of its financial impact. Here, Rory will talk about the important role open data and methodologies provides in helping make Climate Change material for companies, and how further openness can drive sustainable, transformative change.
Dr Rory Fitzpatrick is the Head of Climate Science at Earthena, a company leveraging ML and AI to create enterprise Climate Value Analytics. His prior work has focused on providing decision-centric Climate research in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Outside of work, Rory enjoys American Football, cooking, and singing silly songs to annoy his wife and son!
