June Talk evening: KDE Opt Green - End of Windows 10

Hi PyLadies Berlin! In this event, we will be talking about the end of Windows 10 and what that means for many people with Windows machines. We have three speakers from KDE sharing different aspects of the https://endof10.org/ campaign and how KDE are supporting folks to use their machines longer!

The talk evening will be held in person at Ecosia.org (which will sponsor vegetarian and vegan food and drinks) and online via our YouTube Channel. There will also be a workshop held the same week to help folks convert their windows 10 device to a linux machine and prologue its usage - keep an eye out on our slack for details! 🌟

The most environmentally friendly device is the one you already own!

Windows 10 security updates end on 14 October 2025, which is KDE's 29th birthday and also, ironically, International E-Waste Day (you cannot make these things up!).

Hundreds of millions of functioning devices will become e-waste, disposed of in large part in countries in the Global South. Moreover, this means manufacturing and transporting new ones, perhaps the biggest waste of all: hardware production alone can account for over 75% of a device's CO2 emissions over its lifespan.

In this talk, Nicole will discuss the environmental impact of proprietary software, why a Linux Operating System could be a solution and where you can get help if you decide to switch.

✨ Nicolas Fella (he/him) - Python for KDE Applications
The KDE community has been producing free software for almost 30 years. This does not only include the Plasma desktop environment but hundreds of applications. Virtually all of these applications are written in C++. As part of the "Streamlined Application Development Experience" initiative we want to open the door to include other programming languages as well.

In this talk we are going to look at the recent work on enabling writing KDE applications using Python, how to do it, and how to get involved with improving the support for it.

Level: Intermediate Developer (but may have limited experience in Python)

✨ Oreoluwa (she) - Emulating User Actions with the Python-based Tool KdeGuiTest
In this workshop, Oreoluwa will walk us through KdeGuiTest, an open-source automation tool used to emulate user interaction with different software applications. KdeGuiTest (previously called KdeEcoTest) is an automation and testing tool which allows one to record and simulate user interactions with the GUI of an application. It is being developed as part of the KDE Eco initiative to create usage scenario scripts for measuring the energy consumption of software.

1. A demo of the tool
2. Explanation of the technologies involved and how it is implemented
3. Issues faced while debugging and improving the tool.
4. A call to contribute to the community.

Level: Beginner to programming

👩‍💻 Oreoluwa is a data scientist and open source enthusiast. She has an interest in data and AI and has worked with python to analyse data, build machine learning models and develop graphical user interface for better user experience. She has participated in various hackathons helping her hone her skills in data science and finetuning of large language models to solve real world problems and create innovative solutions.
