Come along to St Margaret’s House, 3rd Floor Workshop space (151 London Road, Edinburgh, EH7 6AE, +44 (0)131 661 1924, info@scot-art.co.uk), from 1pm to 4pm on September Sunday 27th 2026 for a workshop discussing internet privacy, how to use Proton free VPN and a demonstration of Linux TAILS. Bring along an item of food to put on the table and take away what is left at the end; free Artisan Roast coffee and Clipper Organic tea will be served.

IT and Biscuits is a general session where various aspects of computing can be explored and where I take people through some of the helpful things which I have learned about effective computing. In this session I will be opening a general discussion about computer privacy and how people can improve their privacy whilst on the internet by using browsers which are designed to protect the personal data of the individual.
I will try and introduce commentators which offer basic and intermediate understandings of the issues surrounding personal data and privacy as well as introduce well known software which is free, licensed and available for anyone to download and use. Amongst the software I will be exploring are Mozilla Firefox browser, Librewolf browser, Mulvad browser, Brave Browser and others. As well as this I will be showing people how they can install Proton free VPN – a virtual private network which affords a level of privacy to the user and which is one of the few reputable free VPNs available.
Lastly I will be showing people a useful operating system which turns a USB effectively into a computer which is high privacy and security. It is very useful also in situations where if a main laptop or computer breaks, it can offer a system which may allow the person to get online in order to do day to day activity until your main computer is fixed. Very useful to have on a keyring. All this will be had with tea and biscuits where some of the current news about computing is discussed alongside questions and issues which people raise.
A few paragraphs about you:
My name is Alex Dunedin and I have been involved in a number of digital literacies teaching courses and have a personal interest in computer technologies which are private to the user, secure from hackers and fraudsters, and stable so that work does not get lost.
I also have a deep interest in the longevity of computer machines looking at ways of making sure my computers and other peoples computers last a long time and do not end up as e-waste through waves of inbuilt redundancy driven by unscrupulous multinationals.
Having been involved in education for many years now, I have been developing perspectives based around minimal resource computing and computing within limits which step away from the consumer frenzy of constant updates and the deliberate degradation of computer products so that a new wave of products can be sold.
