Future Directions Planning Meeting for Rainbow Atheists

Details

In December 1966, the first known gay rights activism in this country was launched by Australian Humanists. It will soon be the sixtieth anniversary of this event, and it is a good time to review and reboot our Rainbow Atheists group, who have been aligned and connected to Humanists Australia in recent years.

Where to from here?

Since our launch in 2018, the group has successfully run a Facebook group and conducted a number of social events, including zoom meetings featuring national and international speakers. However, COVID lockdowns and a changing culture have made the MeetUp portion of our scope somewhat quiet in recent years. How would you like to see the group continue?

What do you want for the future of this group?

We see religious privilege dominate Australian culture, from the Census with its questions that privilege religion and downplay the existence of LGBT+ people. Parliament and gay press, queer community networks and our own queer conferences all privilege religious perspectives, even though it is estimated that approximately 70% of our queer community is non-religious. Meanwhile, the fight for our rights and freedoms continues both here and overseas.

It time to reclaim our past and our future.

  • At our last meeting, we agreed to keep going as "Rainbow Atheists".
  • We will continue our social media presence and expand to include a "Rainbow Humanists" page as well.
  • We have expanded our official leadership numbers.
  • Our MeetUp presence will continue with zoom meetings, at which we will return to a variety of social and other formats - everything from social meetings to guest speaker talks.
  • Other events might be organised as requested.

Come Along - All Welcome.
Join our journey into the future.
