Local Educator Joins Forces with Navy Veteran Thriller Authors for Unique Rapid City Writing Event

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City educator and writing instructor Molly Barari of Heirlooms Creative Writing is teaming up with U.S. Navy veterans and co-authors David Bruns and J.R. Olson to present a free writing workshop.

The Writer’s Life & Fiction Writing Workshop will take place Saturday, April 11 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Minneluzahan Center. Designed for writers of all ages and skill levels, the workshop brings together local instruction and nationally published experience.

Bruns and Olson will lead the first hour, offering an inside look at the professional writing life. Drawing on their backgrounds as Navy veterans and bestselling thriller authors, they will discuss storytelling, publishing, and how real-world military experience informs their fiction.

Barari will lead the second hour, guiding participants through a live fiction writing exercise and offering a supportive environment for sharing work and receiving feedback.

Over their decade-long partnership, Bruns and Olson have published with a Big Five traditional publishing house, released a series through a mid-sized press, crowdfunded novels, and independently published their work. Their latest release, Weapons Free, is a modern-day submarine thriller in the style of The Hunt for Red October.

Bruns and Olson will also appear at the Rapid City Public Library on Saturday, April 11 from 3 to 4 p.m. for a free talk, Real-World Threats to Page-Turning Fiction. The event will include a discussion of their military thrillers and a behind-the-scenes look at their long-running creative partnership.

Both events are free and open to the public. RSVPs are encouraged for the April 11 writing workshop at Minneluzahan Center. For more information about the authors, visit bruns-olson.com. To reserve a spot for the workshop, contact Molly Barari at mollybarari@gmail.com.
