Afton Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch
Details
September 14 Afton Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch. Join famed Colorado birder Priscilla Erickson to visit the Blue Ridge Parkway and Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch for a fall migration extravaganza! We will bird at paved overlooks along the parkway and then head to the Hawkwatch site to see up to 15 species of southbound migrating raptors in the late morning. For carpooling, meet at 7:00 am at Hickory Haven Park and Ride, just west of Short Pump off I-64. If you would rather meet us there, we will meet at the North Entrance of the Blue Ridge Parkway just off of I-64 at around 8:15 am. We will bird the Parkway until about 10:30 and then return to the Inn at Afton for the Hawkwatch, where expert hawk watch volunteers will help us ID raptors. The third week of September usually has large numbers of Broad-winged Hawks, up to 1,000 per day! This is a beginner friendly trip. Feel free to join for any part of the day. Bring optics, snacks, water, and sun protection. Rain date will be Sunday, September 15th. Contact priscilla.erickson@gmail.com for more information.
