Priscilla Erickson, RAS Field Trip Leader
Meet wonderful birder Priscilla Erickson at the Equestrian Parking Lot in Powhatan State Park at 4:30 pm (–7:00) for an evening bird walk. We’ll bird along some of the park trails looking for field and woodland birds before returning to the Equestrian Lot at sunset to look for American Woodcocks performing their mating displays in the surrounding fields. Depending on our luck and weather conditions, we are likely to hear them but may not see them. Powhatan State Park requires a parking fee (bring $5 cash for a self-pay station) or an annual VA State Park pass. Bring one more layer than you think you need, as the temperature will drop quickly as we wait for it to get dark! Plan to walk ~2 miles on uneven trails for the first part, or you can also join at sunset (6:00 pm) to look for woodcocks. To get to the Equestrian lot, follow the main park road for just over a mile past the pay station and find the lot on your left. Primitive toilets are available.
