React Ladies Lightning Talks

American Express Co

This will be an informal night to network with other JavaScript developers and learn more about various topics related to React and engineering in general through a series of lightning talks. We will be raffling off a signed copy of Eve Porcello's Learning GraphQL, Heroines of JavaScript Trading Cards and a ticket for the Half Stack NYC conference. Speaker Lineup --------------------- React Hooks Mallory Feuer, Full-Stack Engineer Hooks are a new addition in React 16.8. They let you use state and other React features without writing a class. Hooks provide a more direct API to the React concepts we already know: props, state, context, refs, and lifecycle. Hooks also offer a new powerful way to combine these concepts, and help solve a wide variety of seemingly unconnected problems in React. Functional React Components: Create Your Own Design System Soyo Awosika-Olum, Software Engineer at Goldman Sachs How much do you know about stateless components? What can we do with stateless components and how can we use them within our design system? This talk will discuss how to create functional react components and how you can use them for your own design system. What is React Suspense Anyway? Galen Corey, Software Engineer at Simple Health With all the excitement about React Hooks, it's easy to overlook React Suspense, another major addition to the API that shipped this year. We will go over the basics of React Suspense, and talk about how to use it to clean up clunky component logic. How React Native works Anna Garcia, Software Engineer at American Express React Native lets us use React to build mobile apps. But how does the JavaScript code we write end up as a native view? This talk will discuss communication between JS and native realms. We’ll take a look at the current architecture and discuss what’s to come. Refining the 30 Minute Rule Erica Dohring & Ilana Sufrin, Software Engineers at WeWork As an intern or junior engineer, knowing exactly when to ask your team for help can be a tricky situation to parse. I found myself getting this wrong all the time and want to share with you how my manager and I worked together to refine this skill. Good PR for PRs - How to Squash Imposter Syndrome Sarah Mackey, American Express Have you ever decided not to submit a pull request because you're worried about the comments people will make or that your work isn't good enough? Guess what - your work is good enough (and even if it isn't, submitting that PR is almost always the right choice)! Learn how to work past this feeling & help create a more collaborative environment for others to create great products! This event will take place at American Express which is located at 200 Vesey St. When you arrive, please check in at the sign-in table to get your badge. Please do NOT arrive before 6pm (the meetup starts at 6:30). You will be required to pass through a security scan. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided. A valid government ID is required to attend this event.
