Kickoff 2019 with React NOVA: React Hooks, Elm Architecture, and Monad Patterns!

Details

Jump-start the new year with React NOVA! We have three great talks lined up, covering functional programming, the latest React features, and more. Chloe Hwang (frontend developer, Viget) will emcee!

TIMELINE

[ 6:30 - 7:00 ] - Pizza and socializing

[ 7:00 - 7:15 ] - Introductions, call for announcements

[ 7:15 - 8:15 ] - Talks, each about 15 minutes with 5 minutes for Q/A

First Talk: "TEA in React"

Tony will discuss how to use the Elm Architecture (TEA) in React with some help from Redux and Redux-Loop to make reliable web applications. This will be a brief overview of the architecture from a design standpoint.
Speaker: Tony Bradley (Software Engineer, Upside Travel)

Second Talk: "Don’t fear the Monad, learn it!"

Paul will introduce what a monad is and why understanding this pattern is useful, despite the myths that they are complex. He’ll show off a useful babel plugin that makes dealing with them much easier, and show a library that incorporates these ideas into React code.
Speaker: Paul Gray (Software Developer, Learning Objects/Cengage Learning)
