### Holding names for our reserve list for the second date for Crossness… yet another day out with a difference from REAL Socialising…who would have thought a pumping station would have so much interest!
EMAIL – viv@realsocialising.co.uk
Join our visit to this Grade 1 Listed, 1865 waste-water pumping station built by Sir Joseph Bazalgette in Victorian Romanesque style, containing much ornamental cast-iron of outstanding quality. The building houses the largest rotative beam engines in the world, (one being restored). The attached boiler-house houses a visitor centre.
Known as the ‘Cathedral of Sewage‘, Crossness Pumping Station first opened after The Great Stink of 1858. This public disaster came about after commissioners were unable to reach an agreement regarding the city’s sewage systems resulting in the Thames becoming heavily polluted and combined with the warm weather that year, it created a putrid smell, one that almost drove MPs out of Westminster. The remedy, this magnificent example of Victorian architecture and engineering!
