Gun Violence in the U.S. - Our Shameful Epidemic: 2025 update
1300 Ethan Way, Sacramento, CA 95825, Sacramento, Ca, USSunday, October 26, 2025, 2 - 4 pm. Doors open 1:45 pm.
Location: Reason Center, 1300 Ethan Way, Suite 675, Sacramento.
Sponsored by Atheists & Other Freethinkers (AOF).Dr. Bill Durston, MD, president of Americans Against Gun Violence (AAGV), will discuss the main factors driving our gun violence epidemic, the definitive measures needed to stop the epidemic, the obstacles to taking these measures, and ways of overcoming these obstacles.
The rate of gun related deaths in our country is currently at least ten times higher than the average rate for the other high income democratic countries of the world.
Since 2020, gunshot wounds have become the leading cause of death for U.S. children and adolescents. The AAGV position is that we have the ability and the moral responsibility to reduce rates of firearm related deaths and injuries in the U.S. to levels that are at or below the rates in other economically advanced democratic countries.
Bill Durston, MD, worked for more than 35 years as a board certified emergency physician in Sacramento, California, during which time he treated innumerable gunshot victims.
Before becoming a physician, Bill was an expert marksman in the United States Marine Corps, serving in combat in Vietnam, where he was decorated for โcourage and composure under fire.โ
In March of 2016, Bill co-founded a new national non-profit organization,
Americans Against Gun Violence, aagunv.org, to extend to a national level the gun violence prevention work that Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSB/Sacramento) was doing locally.
Bill can be contacted through AAGV by email at info@aagunv.org.-Event is open to the public. -Free parking in the lot.
-Ok to BYO snack/beverage -- or to share if you wish.
-AOF will provide cool, clear water.
-No entrance fee; Donations gratefully accepted.

๐What to expect:
Discussion sparked by short videos about atheism, religion, science, current events, critical thinking, comedy, life hacks, health and beyond >>> followed by moderated discussions.
๐What we're about:
WELCOME to https://www.AheistsUnited.org's meetup - one of many opportunities to engage in mindful discussions, lectures, book clubs, educational forums mostly online, and our In-Person-Volunteer events like the monthly food distribution in person.
Other Atheists United links are listed below.
We are an ethically centered community for greater Los Angeles atheists.
Our mission is to build thriving atheist communities, empower people to express their secular values, and promote the separation of government and religion.
๐Meeting format:
This is a place for atheists to meet, have dinner with (eating on camera is ok), and talk to other atheists, skeptics and humanists.
A few agnostics and religious people sometimes show up as well and they are welcome as long as they are not there to proselytize.
We mandate courtesy and respect to fellow attendees, and no proselytizing. Foremost, this is a social gathering, and support group for like-minded persons, not a debate club.
If you're coming just to argue on matters of religion or politics, don't bother showing up, you're not going to convert anyone, and you will be asked to leave.
๐This is a 2 hour event, but often we go overtime when the discussion and the great atmosphere it requires; or when we can't get enough of seeing familiar faces and perhaps some new ones.
Feel free to stay as long or as short as you'd like.
๐Look out for topics posted in the discussion section and please place your own ideas, questions or concerns in the comments and please feel free to private message any of our co-organizers by clicking on their names.
Bring your unique point of view and add to the discussion.
