Why We Research
As a UX Designer you've probably heard a lot about doing research, but let's face it: it's tough. Your boss or your client doesn't want to pay for it, and if you're honest, a lot of the time you find yourself thinking you know pretty much everything you need to get started anyway. In this presentation we'll talk about why we do research, the way it changes the design process, and how to get past the hurdles time and money put on doing research. We'll talk about these topics while looking at a perfect case study for guidance: the Nintendo Power Glove.
RJ brings a hybrid developer/designer perspective to his role as Director of User Experience at Universal Mind. Having started his career as a developer, RJ's love for people won him over through user research and he's been a designer ever since.
Prior to joining Universal Mind, RJ leveraged his MBA as the Director of Product Management at Convercent and led ethnographic research and customer insight efforts as part of the UX team at EffectiveUI. RJ is a problem-solver and works alongside businesses and their customers to help identify better ways to serve each other.
RJ is a frequent speaker at industry events and especially loves thinking about how interaction with the made world changes people. Additionally, he hosts Denver's chapter of CreativeMornings – a breakfast club and lecture series for local creatives.
At home, RJ is a parent of three, making his life wonderful and chaotic all at the same time. He is also a coffee snob and one of those comic book types.
