What we’re about
We casually banter about sometimes controversial philosophical concepts. You are encouraged to submit your own rants, disagreements, arguments, etc!
Some good things to know about the group :
1 : You are free and encouraged to email us topics at : philosophyrenegade@gmail.com
2 : We don't believe in waitlists. However many people show up, we'll figure it out.
3 : Moderation is done only lightly. The iron fist must be covered in a velvet glove.
4 : Passionate opinions need to be encouraged.
5 : Topic selection is not a democratic process. However, essentially no topic is forbidden from its proper time and place.
6 : Quality over quantity.
7 : Tacos.

FREE SPEECH
The Commons, 550 Laguna St, San Francisco, CA, USEveryone has already heard about this topic. There is not much I can personally say about it that has not already been said.
This incredible speech by Christopher Hitchens more or less describes what it is that I believe :
For the mega super nerds out there, you can also consult the classic *On Liberty *by John Stuart Mill.
Because of the above, I would not typically use this as a topic. However, given some recent events you can probably think of, it behooves us to discuss it. I am of the opinion that, despite the obvious, it is our duty as citizens and thinking persons to discuss and revisit this topic periodically. This is especially the case when contemporary cultural, political, or financial institutions become hostile to speech. I will not do that.
As part of the event, I'm encouraging all of you to, in the days prior to the event, engage in lawful acts of public speech on whatever cause you find important. I'm looking forward to hearing about what your experience was.
Also, just an unrelated heads up; there will be a no kings protest in SF on the same day!
Thank you all,

29 attendeesCARL SAGAN DAY : A COSMIC JOURNEY TO MONTEREY
Dolores Park, 18th and Dolores, San Francisco, CA, USNovember 9th is CARL SAGAN DAY.
For those who are unfamiliar, Carl Sagan was this really awesome astronomer who wrote profoundly poetically. He had a TV show called "Cosmos" which to this day, in my opinion, is the greatest TV science documentary ever made. It received cosmic cultural as well as critical acclaim. However, Cosmos is not merely a scientific documentary. Cosmos is more importantly; a profoundly philosophical, poetic, and spiritual work. There is a reason it was so wildly successful.
Cosmos opens up with this stirring scene.
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8k48bXJDDc)The specific cliffside that Sagan is speaking on, is actually not that far from us. It's right off a small road south of Monterey.
Its located here :
(https://www.quora.com/Where-is-the-location-that-Carl-Sagan-stood-at-the-opening-of-Cosmos)So here is my wild idea : We will have a "Pilgrimage", road trip, whatever all the way down there! If you're in South Bay I'll pick you up on the way down. We can spend the day eating various types of food and contemplating the cosmos.
My car can only transport five people, so I'm setting the limit to 5 people for now. Only sign up if you are SERIOUS! If we get more people to volunteer to drive we can transport more people.
Also, the place is technically privately owned. So unless if we find out who owns it and asks pretty please : We probably won't get too close to it. The journey matters more than the destination!
By the way, I'm considering making this a two day event. Let me know if y'all would be interested in Carl Sagan party.
See you!
