Why Friuli? Because it's fun to say!! Friuli, Friuli, Friuli!
Also because Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a hidden gem. It's a diverse region in northeastern Italy nestled between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. The region is best known for its crisp, light-bodied but rich-tasting white wines, and that’s what most of you will want to bring and expect to taste. Friuli whites showcase both international varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, alongside Italian favorites such as Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, and the rare Picolit.
These wines are all about freshness, purity, and bright acidity, shaped by the pioneering “Friuli method”—a winemaking approach that preserves delicate aromas by limiting oxidation and highlighting the true character of each grape. Friuli is also a good source of orange wines, made from these same varietals but with extended skin contact. Red wine plays a less-important role here, but the lighter-bodied Cabernets, Merlots, and Refoscos are revelatory cool-climate wines. Come taste, guess, and discover what makes Friuli wines so distinctive—no labels, just your senses.
Please bring:
- A bottle of Fruili wine— white, orange, or red, in the $20-$30 range. (The label might say "Friuli-Venezia Giulia" or simply "Friuli", or it could list one of the specific appellations such as Friuli Colli Orientali, Friuli Grave, Friuli Isonzo,
Collio Goriziano, (often just called Collio), Ramandolo or Colli Orientali del Friuli. If you aren't sure, ask your wine seller for help.)
- A plain, brown paper wine bag (the kind they give you at the shop when you buy your wine. If you have a few extras, please bring them too.)
- 4 wine glasses
- Optional: a snack to share
