New Habit Cinema presents three short films to raise funds for victims of the US-Israel war in the Middle East. Donations will be distributed via mutual aid directly with organizers in the region.

Directed by beloved Iranian modernist poet Forough Farrokhzad and set in a leper colony in the north of Iran, The House is Black explores beauty and suffering with readings from the Old Testament, the Qur’an and Forough’s own poetry.

First Case, Second Case dir. Abbas Kiarostami, 1979

A film from before the height of the Iranian Revolution that contrasts establishment to resistance. Portraying two variations of a teacher-student dispute, director Kiarostami examines morality and ideology from the lens of the classroom.

A sense of order is the necessary basis of any good social organisation. Kiarostami directs a series of paired scenes in this educational short film depicting orderly and disorderly versions of events. Depictions of children lining up versus crowding into a bus set the film up to abandon moral judgment in favor of children’s anarchy.

The Richmond Animation Festival returns to the Byrd Theatre for its 2026 feature program: Julian Glander’s feature-length animated comedy “Boys Go to Jupiter” with Glander live in person at The Byrd! Glander created most of this himself and it’s gone on to much acclaim, most recently a John Cassavetes Award nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards. Its all-star cast includes Jack Corbett, Janeane Garofalo, Tavi Gevinson, Elsie Fisher, Julio Torres, Joe Pera, Sarah Sherman, and others. Indiewire praised that the movie “brilliantly juxtaposes the endless creative opportunities afforded to us by digital art with the anxiety of a generation that often feels like its own real-world opportunities are becoming fewer and further between.” See this beautiful movie on the big screen followed by a Q&A with Glander– a not-to-be-missed, unique event.
