What we’re about
Are you passionate about or interested in making changes in the community? Are you looking for more people who are interested in intellectual discussions? Do you want to practice a new language, such as Mandarin, French, Spanish or English in an interesting context? This Meet-Up may be for you.
Description:
This Meet-Up is for people who are interested in creating change in their community. If that description sounded vague, that is point: This MeetUp does not specify what kind of change; it can be amything. The only theme in this group is that it is a place where members brainstorm, research and
discuss together the changes they want to see in the community. In the end, the members may work either individually, in small groups or all together to carry out their goals, depending on what everyone has in mind and whether it aligns with everyone else's ideas.
Some of my personal ideas:
-
Delievring unwanted lunches from cafeterias to shelters (I am already doing doing this)
-
This is an idea that I have not yet acted upon: setting up a system on public transportation where strangers can have interesting conversations with other.
-
I would like to encourage others to begin changing the custom from asking "How are you?" to either asking "Is there anything interesting you would care to share?" or simply saying "I hope you are doing well."
-
I would like to clean up the garbage from a vacant field across from my place and find a sustainable solution so that people no longer use the field as a dumping site.
The purposes of this Meet-Up: Not only are we here to support each other - both instrumentally and morally - in our endeavors to create change but also to meet and bond (to the extent to which you are comfortable, of course) with others who are in pursuit of leadership initiatives and who would like to skip the small talk and dive right into meaningful and intellectual conversation.
The language piece: This is a side objective/bonus in this meet-up. What languages we will be practicing depends on the demographics and interests of the attendees. I know English, three varieties of French, two variations of Mandarin, and very limited Spanish. I'm finding that language classes and learning resources often have very empty content (eg. ordering in a restaurant). In language exchange meet-ups, the only thing that people have in common is that they want to practice a certain language (and I am NOT DISSING those meet-ups AT ALL), so the people don't necessarily have common passions or goals to talk about. Therefore, I would like to create opportunities to practice languages through more meaningful content.
I will stop myself here before I get into a rant going in all directions.
