Silent Disco @ Lake Merritt!
Details
Dance The Change silent Disco presents a day of celebrating music and diversity at the beautiful spot near the Ferryland sign at Lake Merritt! It's the unofficial after party for Oakland Ecstatic Dance that Sunday. Generally 10 to 20 people gather there after for potluck over the years, now we will offer regular silent Disco dance parties for those dance lovers that want to keep the dance going! We will also be offering ambient & delicious Downtempo slow motion dance and cuddle music periodically for those more in a chill mood.
We will dance and enhance life in all ways....always!
*This Will Sell Out (we have only 50 headphones, but over 1000 people invited. Strong community since 2019.) Best to RSVP in advance.

Akasha:
Born into five generations of New Orleans heritage, Akasha grew up surrounded by funk and soul. Her love for music came alive in college, evolving through full moon gatherings and outdoor events in Maui and Bali before she returned to the Bay Area in 2015. Since then, she’s become a vibrant part of the West Coast bass movement. Akasha’s sets weave an eclectic journey through World, Deep House, Amapiano, Afrohouse, Bass, Indie, and Neo-Soul—uplifting, expansive, and always dance-floor ready.

Since 2019 Dance The Change has hosted over 50 pop-up dance parties at lakes, beaches, rooftops all over the Bay Area! We dance and raise funds for good causes for social change. Our main fundraising contributions have gone to the indigenous women lead project Sogoreate Land Trust for them continuing to buy back their native land in Oakland and Berkeley. $5500 raised! Although for for over 25 of the silent Disco we were giving 100% of the proceeds to that cause, currently we are back to 10% of profits go to fundraising. We are working on paying back the initial investment of headphones and gear to keep these events sustainable and going.
Transparency with the funds raised:
Got our first ticket sales! $40 for two tickets. I put $20 suggested donation. I've always kept Dance The Change sliding scale by donation. Not firm. The first 25 events were 100% fundraising nonprofit all money to local charities. Starting in 2020/2021 my DJ friends were complaining because they had no DJ work with Weddings, Co. Events, Ecstatic Dance, etc. so currently the format is:
20% to Dance The Change to pay off gear for headphones, lithium battery, soon solar panels !
20% to local Charity currently still Sogoreate Land Trust
60% split evenly between the DJs.
- if there are no volunteers helping for free, then paid Volunteer gets about a $25-50 portion or so of this depending on total amount.
