June Virtual Event - Intro to R & Data Science Lighting talk
Details
R-Ladies Philly is pleased to host a virtual data science event to help you get started using R! This workshop will introduce the fundamentals and help you get started.
Before the workshop, please install R and RStudio. Tess has provided detailed instructions here: https://github.com/rladies/meetup-presentations_philadelphia/blob/master/2020_06/R%20Studio%20Download%20Tutorial%202020.pdf
Agenda:
6:00: Welcome
6:05-6:20: "6 R Packages to Add to Your Workflow" by Jinyi Kuang
6:20-8:00: Intro to R workshop by Tess Cherlin
About our speakers:
Jinyi Kuang is a research specialist at the Center for Social Norms and Behavioral Dynamics (CSNBD) and a Ph.D. student in Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. She received a B.S. from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2016. Her research focuses on how people's social beliefs and expectations impact behaviors. Specifically, she is interested in how people perceive what is typical or desirable in a social group, how people make inferences of social information, and how individual differences in these inferences impact judgments and decision makings. She hopes these findings could inform intervention design to nudge people do good. Jinyi is currently working with CSNBD to assess social determinants of sanitation behaviors in India. She will present her recent research and how she uses R for her research workflow.
Tess Cherlin is a PhD student at Thomas Jefferson University in the Genetics, Genomics, and Cancer Biology program and does her research in the Computational Medicine Center. She uses computational and wet lab methods to study small noncoding RNA profiles in health and disease contexts. Tess had no experience with R (or coding) when she began her PhD but has found R to be very learnable and incredibly useful for her data analysis. She looks forward to guiding R-Ladies beginners through a hands-on Intro to R workshop!
