Shiny September: Making an interactive web app with R

Details

Are you familiar with Power BI or tableau? Do you want to build a similar interactive web app easily using R?

Shiny is an R package that makes it easy to build interactive web apps using R. There is now a mountain of Shiny apps and extension packages to make interactive web app building easy in R! Find some examples here: https://shiny.rstudio.com/gallery/

There are other R packages that allow to build interactive graphics, such as plotly (https://plot.ly/r/). This workshop aims for participants to work together to build an interactive web app using R with the main focus on shiny but will touch on other packages as well.

Who is this for?

From beginners to experts who know R but have not used `shiny` before. If you know `shiny`, you are welcomed to come too and your help to help others would be very much be appreciated!

A plan but not “the” plan

The workshop will cover an introduction to R markdown, plotly and shiny. With time permitting, we will talk about some extension packages.
There will be ample time for the attendees to interact and learn from each other.
The goal of the workshop will be to have a working web app at the very end! There will be a number of group tasks provided but you are free to pursue what you want!

What you need to bring

A laptop with R and Studio installed
Installing shiny, rmarkdown, and plotly package (if you do not how, no worries!)
It will be handy if you have an account at https://www.shinyapps.io/ and R Pubs https://rpubs.com/ (both of them are completely free).

Who’s presenting?

Emi is a lecturer in statistics at the University of Sydney who enjoys working in a collaborative environment with people from diverse backgrounds with an aim to understand real data. Her main research interest lies in the development of useful tools for practitioners and statistical modelling with application to agriculture. She is the author of the package `shinycustomloader`.
