This group will meet twice a month--once to discuss a selection of literary fiction, and once for a non-fiction selection. If you enjoy reading and you'd like to get together and discuss a book with others who have read it, this is your book club! Everyone is welcome--male or female, gay or straight, democrat, republican or independent.
Literary fiction is a term commonly used to distinguish serious fiction from popular or "pulp" fiction. According to Wikipedia: "In broad terms, literary fiction focuses more on style, psychological depth, and character, whereas mainstream commercial fiction (the page-turner) focuses more on narrative and plot." "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and "When Will There Be Good News" by Kate Atkinson are examples.
Our non-fiction selections will be books that you would typically see being promoted on shows like "The Daily Show" or "The Colbert Report". These books might be about the current state of world affairs (e.g. "The Post American World" by Fareed Zakaria), environmental issues ("Hot, Flat & Crowded" by Thomas Friedman), or history ("John Adams" by McCullough or "Ladies of Liberty" by Cokie Roberts).
Regular members are asked to contribute $15 per year to offset our Meetup.com organization dues.
