Are you a Human Barometer?
by Edward Lee
How should we, as students of mysticism, cope with life’s pressures and anxieties? A promotional leaflet that was disseminated at one time by the Rosicrucian Order asked in its headline an interesting and provocative question: “Are You a Human Barometer?” It went on to question whether one’s sense of balance and equilibrium was dependent upon every shift of the wind or turn of the tide. Furthermore, it encouraged one to seek a stabilizing influence in life through sensible and rational mystical studies.
A barometer, of course, is a device that measures atmospheric pressure. The most common type utilizes a column of mercury that coincides with the prevailing atmospheric pressure. The liquid mercury rises and falls a small amount in accordance with the variations of the weight of a column of atmosphere. Another type, the aneroid barometer, measures atmospheric pressure without the use of liquid. This barometer has an indicating needle or pointer mechanically attached to it. As this capsule-styled barometer with flexible walls changes in accordance with atmospheric pressure, the spring action needle indicates such fluctuations on a graph.
In the animal kingdom, certain species are reported to exhibit nervousness and fear before an earthquake or a tsunami strikes. A shift in atmospheric pressure is suspected as being the cause of this behavior. And there dwells in the Great Barrier Reef off the northeast coast of Australia the barometer crab, a lilac-colored creature whose deep red spots vary in accordance with changes in the weather.
We, as humans, for the most part do have a choice of reaction to our environment and its pressures. Whether or not we decide to exercise that freedom of choice is one subtle but distinct difference between the behavior of animals and the behavior of the more evolved species of living things called Homo sapiens.
