Here in the Western hemisphere, when most people think of Ruby they immediately think of Ruby on Rails. Most "Ruby" job postings involve Rails, and the line between the language and the framework is often so blurry we associate them as one and the same.

But there's a lot more to Ruby beyond just web development. In this talk, we will explore some of the "hidden gems" of Ruby, without using "gems" at all - just good old stdlib. We'll cover a collection of things ranging from ri/rdoc, rake, different ways of executing external commands, and messing with FileIO.
