ROROSyd (August 2024)
Details
Welcome to ROROSyd!
ROROSyd (Ruby on Rails Oceania Sydney) is a monthly community-led meetup where we give talks about Ruby, software development the local job market.
While our meetups are usually on the second Tuesday of every month, this one is on a WEDNESDAY.
TALKS
- MATT CRAMP
Ethical Design Systems
Why can you sign up for a service via a website, but you have to call them to cancel? Could Facebook be your cruellest friend? Does Duolingo make it harder to learn a language? And why should you spend your Wednesday night listening to a talk that seems suspiciously like it's about ethics? Take a whirlwind tour of the shady, the broken and the just plain evil ways that software developers manipulate users, so you can recognise them in the wild, and maybe even stop your bosses from proposing them. - JOHN COOTE
Join the Dots: using Rails to peer into the Game of Mates; Politicians, Donations and Well Connected Individuals
"Using publicly available data (primarily from the AEC) To see who is making donations into our political system, who they are connected to, and what they are getting in return. All of these real world relationships can be mapped to relationships in a database, and of course the best way to do that is with Ruby on Rails."
This talk will cover some of the architectural decisions made, the code, the deployment process and the live site data.
