IN PERSON STUDY & CONVERSATION GROUP - OCCULT BACKGROUND TO THE BHAGAVAD GITA
WITH BRENDAN MCQUILLAN
Rudolf Steiner gave some of his most significant lectures to audiences in the far north of Europe. These 1913 Helsinki lectures on The Occult Background to the Bhagavad Gita (GA 146) are in that company.
The wonderful, two thousand year old Gita describes the inner struggle of a warrior, Arjuna, in a fierce outward battle against blood relatives. He does not yet identify himself with his individual ‘I’ and the Gita tells of his transition from identifying with the ‘I’ of his group or tribe – with the ‘I’ of his blood – to identification with his individual ‘I’. To achieve this, the god Krishna confronts Arjuna like an all-embracing Cosmic Egoist, admitting of nothing but Himself, and even requiring others to admit of nothing but themselves. Steiner reveals Krishna’s connection with the Nathan Jesus. The question arises: how can such a sublime teaching as the Bhagavad Gita be thus bound up with universal egoism?
